How often have you planned to buckle down and seriously focus on a work project, only to be distracted by everything under the sun?
More than once, I've fled the chaos of my home—with the goal to buckle down and focus on work. At one point, I even joined a lively, nearby coworking space. The allure of a professional environment with like-minded individuals seemed perfect for boosting productivity. I arrived with high hopes, armed with my laptop and a list of tasks to conquer.
But instead of finding peace, I end up surrounded by a symphony of other distractions! Pretty soon, I was participating in the frequent networking events, ended up in lots of 1:1 conversations with other professionals, or I would overhear an interesting discussion happening at the next table, where my curiosity would get the better of me and I'd jump in.
In the end, the very place I chose to enhance my focus and productivity ironically became a hub of delightful distractions. Ha!
The thing is, attention is a precious resource we need to manage wisely. Distractions, on the other hand, are costly. A study from the University of California Irvine found that it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to get back to a task after a single interruption.
You do the math on that wasted time throughout the day – it’s alarming! ??
To avoid productivity setbacks and really make progress, we need to actively work on two things: encouraging our focus and reducing interruptions. It’s not always easy in a world that constantly vies for our time, but it’s doable. Here are some techniques to help you confidently minimize distractions and cultivate your most valuable resource: your attention.

5 个月good stuff as always... makes me laugh since it seems we design office spaces to maximize distraction lol most pros agree we need flexible spaces to adapt rapidly to our needs. on another note... did you see the surgeon general wants to put a warning on social media? I know it's touchy, but this is my kids and grandkids we're talking about and they are soooooo distracted due to social media addition (not to mention more than a few employees at work too, sadly), plus social media is harming young people, especially girls, so I think I support a call for warnings / restrictions, the science clearly backs this up, though if we do it a generation of young people might totally disown us! what are we to do? :)

5 个月Don't think that no one is watching you with closed eyes but someone is there, who is watching. Your calm mind is only the ultimate weapon against your challenges. So Relax and have faith in God and have confidence in Yourself. Health and wealth don't Come from medicine or from your Empire. Most of the time it comes from a peaceful heart, Soul, Laughter, love, and with Positive thoughts.

5 个月Yes! The power of what is in my line of sight is huge...I have started putting my phone and coffee mug in another room, and keeping my water next to me. I've noticed a huge difference in my productivity and focus already.

5 个月Yes, I get way too distracted at work. I turn off all chat and email notifications so I can check them when I'm ready during a pre-determined time. And, I put focus blocks in my calendar ahead of time so I can plan when to focus on project work. I also tune into the ebb and flow of the office. I'm not going to get focus time in before 10.30am- that is peak time for everyone to be getting settled and do the coffee run, chat socially etc. As you mentioned, social connections are an important part of working in a team! So I push those focus blocks out to times where it's quieter on the floor.
