Staying Connected
Hello and welcome to the last few weeks of 2024!
It’s an exciting time of year as we tick off the essential tasks and look forward to a few weeks of downtime. I'll be stepping away from the tools for a good week or two to get some rest and recalibration in the bush and at the beach.
Many people have told me that it’s a mad rush to the finish line for them. And it’s funny because we tend to think of the end of the year like this, don’t we?
That we race to the end, have a rest, and start all over again!
If this sounds like you, I urge you to slow down and enjoy what’s going on around you. It’s so healthy to find a slower pace, setting aside time for connection to self and others.
Find time for mindful self awareness.
Mindful connection. Mindful eating. Mindful time alone.
All of these can add fuel rather than deplete it.
In Taoism, there is an emphasis on the interconnectedness of all things, where knowing and understanding yourself strengthens your connection with others, and vice versa.

This month we look at supporting those who feel isolated, and how you can stay connected to yourself and others during this time of year.
The 2024 Gallup State of the Global Workplace Report states that 1 in 5 people experienced loneliness the previous day. With as much as 20% of the workforce feeling lonely, it is important to note that the more engaged an employee is, the less loneliness they feel (read more).

On the surface, it seems logical that bringing people together physically should increase the sense of connection at work. But peering beneath the surface we find that connection is much more nuanced.
Physical connection plays a role. But so does emotional connection. This includes emotional connection to others, and also to self. I know looking back on my life there were times where I sat in a crowded room and felt very much alone. The number of people with me didn’t matter. What was missing was my feeling of belonging with them, and my feeling of connection and purpose within.

Remember that for some people, the routine of the workday can act as a support when dealing with feelings of isolation, personal relationship breakdowns, financial pressures, illness, or loss.
If there is anyone in your team who has been through challenging times, it might help them to know that you are still available for support during this time. Being there to listen and support can be so meaningful as they navigate this challenge.

3 个月Great article. I talk with many who feel lonely surrounded by people they don’t feel connected with. On the outside people would think they were fine, but under the surface they’re craving someone to just “get them”.
