How OKRs help you align your remote people
A hybrid or remote working model is the new normal today. Employees like flexibility, and virtual meetings have become a normal routine.
According to a McKinsey survey,?87% of American workers?prefer to work hybrid if given a chance.
Challenges
Managing work with remote employees comes with new challenges, such as a lack of trust between managers and employees, people moving into silos, burnout, work-life disbalance, failure to meet targets and goals, etc.
There is a lesser exchange of work-related and human information between employees, easily leading to miscommunication and misunderstandings.
Many managers have tried different approaches to align and help improve the performance of their remote teams, such as frequent reporting or frequent check-ins, but have remained ineffective.
The need of the hour is to develop a mutual understanding and trust to build better accountability and autonomy.
The OKR way
It all starts with open communication and sharing clear expectations with remote employees.
You set goals for your people that are linked to the top-level business objectives and are visible to everyone.
You set clear expectations for people and regularly check their progress on OKRs, thus, building more accountability.
With OKRs, remote employees can more easily align with office employees by giving them common, clear, measurable goals. They can align their actions to achieve specific KRs.
For example, to achieve a simple KR of getting 20% more leads from the website, a marketing manager and a remote content writer who owns it work to plan and implement the required strategy to achieve it.
Both are answerable for this goal, and this outcome-based KR gives direction to the writer’s work which could have just focused on output and less on the quality of their work otherwise.
