"Annie's" CFO asked her if she wanted to move to another role that has nothing to with her current role (Director of HR) and, frankly, seems like is some B.S.
Annie: That was my first sign that it's pretty bad. I figured it's time to start job hunting.
Me: TBH, the first sign was 2 months ago when your entire team was terminated. What the CFO said to you is just additional confirmation.
Annie: I know. I was just so focused on keeping my head down and working crazy hours that I didn't really pay as much attention, as I should.
Me: I get that you want to do great work. But never again get so involved in your job that you're not seeing what's going on around you and what it means for you, not them. Always keep one foot outside of an employer's door, looking at other opportunities. We don't own employers' jobs, we own ourselves.
Also Me: Are you ready to be let go? Don't be surprised if it happens soon, like this week. They've laid the groundwork.
Annie: You think? Yeah, I guess so.
Me: Good. Now let's review effective job hunt strategies.
Employed people: Stay aware of what's going on in your firm. Don't listen that much to what they say. Watch what they do. Stay ready to get another job. Invest everything in YOU, not them.

2 年My mother would always tell me to keep one foot on the ship and the other one on the pier. I followed that advice all my life and it got me away from jobs that was bad for me before that damage my motivation and energy to move on. Love your article and especially hope the young generation is listening.
