Films for Black History Month 2024
Dear Reader, February seems a long way off, but we thought it would be helpful to receive film suggestions in advance! Our Pragda team has curated a special selection of titles for you, following three main themes related to Black History Month that expand its scope to include the Afro-Latin experience:

Fighting?Discrimination
Celebrating the power of cinema to inspire change, these four films shine bright in their dedication to confronting racism and discrimination. Elena is a spirited tale of a family fighting to preserve their roots in the Dominican Republic; Perro Bomba showcases the experiences of a Haitian immigrant in Chile; Seeds highlights a powerful political movement led by Black women in Brazil; and A Brudda’s Mind features Saulo challenging racial disparities in Fortaleza inspired by the Black Panther Movement.
Exploring One’s Own Identity
Embark on an uplifting journey of self-discovery with these films. Miriam Lies navigates racial prejudices during a vibrant quincea?era celebration; Between Fire and Water follows Camilo’s quest to understand his identity as the sole black person raised in an indigenous community in rural Colombia; El Blanco follows Genesis as she is forced to marry a white man to better her race; in Bad Hair, a nine-year-old’s desire for self-expression sparks a poignant coming-of-age story.

Cultural Contributions
Celebrate the vibrant cultural contributions of black individuals to Latin America with these uplifting films. In Black in Latin America, Professor Gates explores the profound impact of millions of people of African descent; Diaspora Drums explores two drums of African origin and their political and cultural ramifications in Brazil; Dreams of Chonta follows Afro-Colombian musician Diego’s journey to become a cultural ambassador in New York; and Bixa Travesty spotlights Linn da Quebrada, a charismatic black transgender singer, challenging gender norms.
