Job Hunting can be tiresome. Going from one interview to another, sending your resume to different places, is exhausting. Rejections and unanswered emails further add to the exhaustion. It is difficult to stay motivated while job hunting even for the most confident people.
Follow these steps to stay motivated while job hunting:
1.?????Create a meaningful vision board for yourself
Before hitting apply, sit back and research about what companies you really want to be a part of. Shortlist at least 5 companies that seriously excite you. Create a board where you write all of them, followed by the why you want to work for them. This is personal to you. It may be because you like a certain lifestyle or respect a certain somebody in the company who you want to learn from. It can also be because you admire the kind of impact the company brings in.
Write down these reasons and keep this vision board with yourself. Whenever you feel dejected, this list will help you stay motivated while job hunting.
?2.?????Quality over quantity
Do not start hitting apply on every other job you see. Do not set a target to apply to 20 in one day. Go for quality over quantity by applying for each company to the best of your ability.
Read about the company you have applied for. Tailor your resume with specific keywords for the specific company. Talk to a few people in the industry or the company. Clean up your LinkedIn. These small and qualitative measures will triumph over quantitative ones. Setting unrealistic targets will only bring dissatisfaction and disappointment to you.
So, instead of giving yourself a quantitative target like “I’ve got to apply to 10 companies today”, give yourself a qualitative one “I’ve got to understand as much as I can about this industry today.”
3.?Check whom you surround yourself with

4.?Collect feedback
Whenever you don’t get a job, make sure you ask the recruiter where exactly you lacked. Sometimes the recruiter may not respond, but sometimes he/she will. Understanding your specific areas of shortcomings will help you overcome them quickly before your next job interview.
?5. Create a file about yourself
?Collect the words of endorsement, positive review, or encouragement given to you along the way. It can be the LinkedIn Skills endorsement or a manager’s positive feedback. It can also be something positive the recruiter told you about you. It can be something that a friend told you about you.
These skills may not be highlighted in your resume. Whenever you feel low, these testimonials will show how you are much more than your resume. It’ll help you acknowledge your achievements and be proud of yourself.
You can also reference these testimonials to potential employers in job interviews. However, the main goal is to use it for personal motivation.
6.?Create Value:
When you’re in a job, you feel valued because you do plenty of impactful work. It is this feeling of creating value that will keep you motivated while job hunting. Start small, and create value by sending a thank you note to those who help you in your journey. This will light up their faces and make you feel good. You can also start by helping someone else in their journey in some small way. This can be done by sharing some piece of information you have that they need.
On a larger level, you can create and feel valued by being a part of social causes. Raising money for charity, and volunteering for local causes will help. Firstly, it will consume your time so you don’t have time to feel demotivated. Secondly, it will make you feel valued and thus will uplift your mood.
?7.?Be Grateful
Sometimes, the best way to alleviate one’s mood is to simply count one’s blessings. “So what if today is not going as I wanted it to go? So what if I am currently in a difficult space? In life, I am at a place many people dream to be. Especially in a country like India, filled with poverty, I should be grateful for all I have. I should keep moving ahead, however, slow it is.”
Stay motivated by writing down 3 things you are grateful for daily. Read all these points at the beginning of your next day to start your day on a positive note.?
