Stay In The Moment

Are there any Blues supporters who watched the game last night and thought “What Happened?” They were in a commanding position, dominating the state of play, were a cohesive and experienced team and had all the support they needed to achieve their desired outcome, yet failed to get the job done. Why?
Many times during the early years of my surfing career I found myself in make or break moments and often cracked under the pressure. Why? My thoughts weren’t supporting me. In actual fact, they were sabotaging me. Thoughts such as this is too hard, I’m exhausted, my competitor is way too strong or much better than me in these conditions, she's more experienced and deserves the win. I’ve done the work but today just isn’t my day.
How on earth do these thoughts support me? They validate me and my current belief that I am losing, so I may as well accept it and start thinking about the next event. This instantly sabotages the moment, preventing me from investing in the learned processes and actions that will increase my likelihood of success, today, in this moment.
So, what can you do to turn this around? Self-awareness is key. Tune in before you tune out. We must learn to listen to our thoughts then learn how to shift them. Stay in the moment by taking a deep breath and ask yourself “What do I need to do right now to stay in the game?”. It is as simple as that. We can often over complicate success by thinking we need to do more, be more and have more to deserve the outcome. If so, simply start here.
Day to day, you can apply this simple strategy to stay in the moment, overcome any challenge or obstacle. Start by noticing your posture - is it erect or slumped; breathe - is it short and sharp or deep and slow, and your emotions - are you feeling tense or relaxed.
We can transform our lives, evolve our consciousness and experience success by simply starting with where you are right now, in this moment.
