While the pandemic has had a negative impact on many industries, the online gaming industry is one that saw a positive growth. As people were asked to stay home online gaming activities skyrocketed since March 2020. Even the World Health Organization encouraged people to stay in and play with its campaign #PlayApartTogether.
Some parts of the gaming industry did see downturn such as e-sports, which had to shift from live events to remote play. The Taipei Game Show and the Mobile World Congress(home to many new consumer tech launches) have been cancelled due to Covid-19. However, the online gaming segment has remained unscathed.
The lockdown has given a boost to India’s online gaming industry, which is already among the top five. A BARC-Nielsen report estimates that as the lockdown progressed gaming took up nearly 30 percent of smartphone usage.
Some lockdown stats: April'2020 saw PUBG cross the 600 million milestone while Games2Win saw 15 lakh daily players against the earlier 11-12 lakh. Paytm First Games saw a 200 percent increase as well. These numbers are encouraging.

Google-KPMG estimates that by 2025, the online gaming market could become a $300 billion industry. By 2021, India will have 628 million gamers. Technavio Research suggests a CAGR growth of 9 per cent for the global video game market 2019-2023 with the Asia-Pacific region contributing 56 per cent of it.
Gaming not only works as a stress-reliever, but also aids in developing your mental skills and abilities. Additionally, the lockdown has created a more social gaming environment. The Indians have found an affinity with it due to tons of gaming apps available in the market for free as well as low-cost data. Gaming companies have been able to fulfill the needs of users while working from home as well.
India’s 300 million gamers make up about 43 percent of the annual gaming revenue growth. Newer technologies like AI, ML, 5G, cloud, virtual reality, etc., will only accelerate the growth of the industry and enable newer business models. With the boost it has received in the last three months, the country is all set to stay in the fast lane.
