In 1998 I had been running my small bootstrapped business for 12 years. We were doing well but all of a sudden I had several big financial decisions that had to be made along with a few nagging personnel issues that needed to be resolved.
Unfortunately, I felt like I couldn’t get any clarity on either of those issues. So, I decided to take a break. I packed my bags and went to a small yoga retreat in the Bahamas. Three days of no electronics, twice daily yoga, meditation, and healthy foods.
When I returned home, I heard one of my kids asking my wife, what happened to dad? Concerned, she answered, nothing. What do you mean? He answered, well, he came back from his trip and seems so relaxed. Children see and sense everything.
There is a lot of anxiety in business. And it affects us more than we may realize. There’s a constant, how do I get more of one thing and reduce something else? Do I take a chance on something new or double down on an existing plan?
Maybe you’re faced with strategic or tactical decisions about your business or career right now. Making the wrong decision will make things even worse.
Here’s something I know for sure:
If you’re ruminating about bad past decisions you will be stuck and depressed. If you’re worrying about what’s going to happen in the future, you will be anxious. Both of which take up too much of your mindspace.
The only true way to make good decisions (and be happier) is to live in the present. Ask yourself this; Today, what can I focus on, take action on, and be grateful for?
I hear the questions: Well, if I don’t learn from past mistakes how will I keep from making them again? Or, If I don’t think about the future, how can I make any plans? There is no problem looking back or making a plan. But they cannot consume your life.
What I learned in my three-day retreat away from it all was just as a clenched fist cannot accept coins into it, a closed or chaotic mind has no room to meet the challenges you face today.
So here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it: If you have regrets from the past that bother you or anxiety of what has not yet even happened, Do this: Schedule this reflection and planning time on your calendar, just like an appointment. 15 minutes a day should do it. Then block out those thoughts. If they pop up, just say to yourself, I’ll get to that at my scheduled time, and then move on. Doing so will make you more productive, successful, calmer, and happier.
Please share this idea with someone or a group who could use it. Remember, one hand washes the other and together they get clean. Thank you for watching. Have a really rewarding week. And I’ll see you next time.
