Stay abreast of the digital landscape and capabilities in your industry!

Do you continuously keep hearing the trendy buzzwords such as #AI (Artificial intelligence), #RPA (Robotic Process Automation), Machine Learning, Augmented Reality, and others? These buzzwords are all around us in the workplace and home alike. We are seeing commercials, social media ads, and billboards touting the next industrial revolution wave, which is gearing to change our everyday lives. Digital innovation is that wave and, in one way or another, it will affect all of us.

Pretty exciting, right? It depends on whom you ask! There are individuals who know it is coming but don’t understand their own role to play in it, others are very excited about the capabilities this will unlock, and then there are some who push back against it concerned of possible adverse effects on them and their jobs. I was talking about this very topic with a Gen Z acquaintance earlier last month; he seemed very excited about it and I too share in this excitement that, after the last industrial revolution started approximately 250 years ago, it created unthinkable industries for that time. I am thrilled with the potential of digital innovation. The best choice is to embrace a learning mindset and keep up with the digital landscape!

What can we do in our workplace to support our organization and develop ourselves?

Learning is an essential component in the future landscape of work. Let’s start by learning more about how this next industrial revolution will affect our organizations at every level. In HR Technology part of each individual’s job is to keep abreast of what is going on around them, especially as it relates to the digital landscape.

I know you may think “I do not have the time” or “it’s overwhelming to keep up with it all” or “where do I start?”

The first challenge is simple: make time. We all have to.

More so now than ever, we have the ability to learn about almost anything known to man; there is so much public knowledge available; especially around digital capabilities. This information is readily available by looking at Social Learning, Digital Publications, White Papers, and Corporate L&D content; and this is just to name a few. A good starting point is to compare our current digital potential to a prospective new one vendors might be offering; also, we can take a look at new entrants - those that are disrupting the status quo.

In the corporate technology landscape, innovation is prevalent, and it is included in HR technology as well. The experience and delivery of services to patients, consumers, team members and/or our social groups are changing rapidly. We innovate and support the future of our workplaces by exploring and grasping the changes in the digital landscape. Our jobs depend on it.

Staying up to date around evolving technologies enhances our skills and aligns us to the future of work in our organizations. I see several benefits to this:

  • Develop a competitive advantage to ensure the digital capability is strategically aligned with the organization.
  • Learn about innovation in technology and digital transformation across industries and continents.
  • Understand those strategic capabilities that give the opportunity to automate but also enhance the efficient delivery of services.
  • Identify opportunities within the existing ecosystem of technologies that can be explored further to create additional capabilities in your work.

To recap, the essential component of our job should be continued learning and understanding of the digital landscape around us (and especially in our workplace aka #thefutureofwork). We must find the right resources for our learning process and filter information in the most efficient ways. This will enable us to support our organization strategically, efficiently, and to embrace this next industrial revolution wave we are all surfing in right now! It’s fun. Let it be fun.

I would love to hear about how your organization is deploying digital capabilities to enhance service delivery!
