Statutory medical examiner system coming into force in September
The reforms to death certification and the introduction of medical examiners will start on 9 September 2024. As part of the changes, a new medical certificate of cause of death (MCCD) for England and Wales will replace the current certificate.
Medical practitioners must use the new MCCD from 9 September when the new statutory medical examiner system will take effect.? The Department of Health and Social Care is committed to ensuring all organisations in both the NHS and independent sectors that need MCCDs can get them.?There is still time to register to receive MCCDs and guidance on how to ensure you receive the new MCCD in time can be found here.
And finally, do check that you are on the MCCD distribution list – if you have already contacted the DHSC , you don’t need to anything. If you’re not sure, you can check if your organisation is on the list here.
