Static and Dynamic RLA

Static and Dynamic RLA

Hi LinkedIn community,

I wanted to continue our discussion on Role Level Security (RLS) in Power BI and delve deeper into the different types of RLS that can be implemented.

There are two main types of RLS in Power BI: Static and Dynamic.

  1. Static RLS:
  2. This type of RLS is based on static rules that do not change over time. For example, if you have a report that shows data for a specific department, you can use static RLS to restrict access to this report only to users who belong to that department. In this case, the rules will not change over time and will remain static.
  3. Dynamic RLS:
  4. This type of RLS is based on rules that change over time. For example, suppose you have a report that shows data for a specific project, and you have a team working on that project. As the team members change over time, you may need to update the rules to ensure that only the current team members have access to the report. In this case, the rules are dynamic and will change over time.

Both Static and Dynamic RLS can be implemented using roles and rules, as discussed in my previous post. It's essential to carefully consider which type of RLS is appropriate for your use case to ensure that the data is secured appropriately.

I hope this post has given you a better understanding of the different types of Role Level Security in Power BI.
