The majority of veterans in the United States fall between the ages of 45 and 64–but of course, not all of them fit within that demographic. To better understand and recognize our servicemen and women across the country, we set out to uncover where the youngest and oldest U.S. veterans live.

Using Census data, we were able to map out which states have the largest group of veterans, both young and old. Read on to see what we found.

The demographic landscape of veterans across the United States is diverse, with varying age groups comprising the veteran populations within each state.?

For example, Alaska has a considerable presence of younger veterans, with 12% of its total veterans falling between 18 and 34, exceeding the national average of 7.90%.??

North Dakota and Hawaii are close behind, with young veterans comprising 11.13% and 11.01% of their respective total veteran populations.?

On the other side, states like New Jersey are home to the oldest veterans in the country.?

An impressive 34% of New Jersey's total veterans are 75 and older, contrasting the national average of 24.57%. Massachusetts and Rhode Island closely follow, with 33.80% and 32.87% of their veterans in this age bracket, respectively.

When looking at the ages of veterans across different states, we see different patterns emerge by gender. Some states lead the way in specific categories and deviate from the national averages.?

North Dakota, for instance, houses 4.37% of its total female veterans within the age group of 18-34. This figure is more than three times the national average of 1.39%, highlighting the prominent presence of young female veterans in the region.?

Similarly, Alaska leads the country in the percentage of young male veterans. An impressive 10.15% of Alaska's total male veterans fall within the 18-34 age bracket, outpacing the national average of 6.51%.?

Moving onto the older demographic, Delaware has the highest percentage of female veterans aged 75 and older, representing 1.46% of the state's total veterans. This figure is more than double the national average of 0.71%.

?New Jersey continues to be significant in the context of older veterans, with a staggering 32.89% of the state's total male veterans being 75 or older, again dwarfing the national average of 23.86%.

Methodology

To determine the states with the highest percentage of young and old veterans, we analyzed the age demographic data of veterans in each state from the U.S. Census. For each state, we compared the number of veterans ages 18 to 34 and the number of veterans 75 and older to the total number of veterans in each state.?

?From there, we determined the state with the highest percentage of total veterans between 18 and 34 and the state with the highest percentage of total veterans 75 and older. Next, we filtered the data by gender to discover which states had the oldest and youngest veterans by gender.
