States Changing Policing Practices in the Aftermath of George Floyd's Death

More than a third of U.S. states enacted new restrictions on police power or oversight of law enforcement actions in the months after George Floyd’s death, with additional legislatures diving into the politically fraught issue this year.

Changes include chokehold bans, limiting liability to on-duty officers for alleged civil violations, required state investigations of officer-involved deaths, and a mandate to fire peace officers pleading guilty or no contest to crimes involving use of force. (with charts)
