The State of the Privacy Industry: Rising Salaries, Lingering Gender Pay Gaps, and Future Predictions

I recently read The IAPP article, "Privacy pros’ salaries rise, yet pay gaps by gender persist". The article highlights that privacy professionals' salaries have increased, but gender gaps in pay still persist in the industry. The median salary for privacy professionals has risen by 7% since the last salary survey in 2017, and 11% since 2015, likely reflecting the increasing demand for privacy knowledge, skills, and experience. The median salary of Chief Privacy Officers (CPOs) has increased by about 44% since 2015.

However, the article also notes disparities in pay and bonuses for privacy professionals based on geographic location and gender. Privacy professionals based in the EU or UK have a lower median salary than those based in the US. Additionally, the gender pay gap persists, with women receiving lower salaries, less frequent raises, and smaller bonuses than men in similar roles, especially in the US and UK.

Overall, the state of privacy-related salaries is positive, with an increasing demand for privacy expertise driving wage growth. However, the gender divide in the industry is concerning, and efforts must be made to close the gender pay gap.

The Privacy industry is booming right now and I'd say predictions on a global scale are difficult. What are your thoughts on these...

  1. Increasing Demand for Privacy Professionals: The demand for privacy professionals is expected to continue growing as organisations prioritise data protection and privacy compliance. As more jurisdictions establish or enhance privacy laws, there will be an increased need for skilled professionals to navigate these complex regulatory frameworks.
  2. Sustained Salary Growth: The upward trend in salaries for privacy professionals is likely to continue over the next 5 years. With the increasing demand for privacy expertise, professionals with in-demand skills and experience may command higher salaries. However, the rate of salary growth may vary depending on factors such as geographic location and industry sector.
  3. Efforts to Address the Gender Pay Gap: The persistence of the gender pay gap in the privacy industry, as highlighted in the article, is concerning. In the next 5 years, there may be an increased focus on addressing this inequality, with organizations implementing measures to promote pay equity, diversity, and inclusion. These efforts may include transparency in salary structures, diversity initiatives, and programs aimed at supporting and advancing women in the industry.
  4. Intersection of Privacy and Emerging Technologies: As new technologies continue to emerge, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and Internet of Things (IoT), the privacy industry will need to adapt and evolve. Professionals will be required to possess a deep understanding of the privacy implications of these technologies and be able to navigate the associated challenges to ensure compliance with privacy laws and regulations.
  5. Harmonisation of Global Privacy Standards: The privacy landscape is becoming increasingly global, with more countries implementing their own privacy laws and regulations. In the next 5 years, there may be efforts to harmonise these standards, facilitating cross-border data transfers and providing a more consistent framework for privacy compliance globally.
