The State of Platforms 2024

2024 is shaping up to be the year of platforms. For those thinking it was Gen AI - that will be a feature/functionality inside of platforms.

For 10 years we have been hearing that every company in every industry is becoming a tech company and that software is eating the world. Stock markets have (over)compensated winners - just do a descending sort on the world's most valuable companies and ask the platform question.

What is really happening is that every company (banks, automotive, pharma, retail, manufacturers, etc.) are in a race to become the platform for their buyers. Platforms are propelled by gravity - buyers, sellers, and service firms are all pulled into multi-sided digital marketplaces better suited to a new integration-first buyer. B2C and B2B markets are working in parallel - for every Amazon or Uber there is an AWS or Microsoft.

The ecosystems that surround buyers can now be better monitored, measured, and managed. Right in time with the end of the marketing cookie, buyer discovery, intent, and sentiment will be available (in real-time) via second-party partnerships.
