The state of our 2024 predictions, phone screen interview prep, new roles posted

Greetings from Recruiting from Scratch, and welcome to this week’s edition of the RFS Report!

How will our predictions for 2024 hold up in Q2?

We made a few predictions at the end of 2023, including ones on work style preferences and executive hiring. We’ll update our polls and share more numbers in the coming weeks, but wanted to share our observations so far. ?

At the start of this month, we’re seeing our clients want:

  • 36.5% of their hires to be on-site (up 12.5% since the end of 2023)
  • 36.5% of their hires to be hybrid (down 15.5% since the end of 2023)
  • 27% of their hires to be remote (slightly up 3% since the end of 2023)

We’re shifting from more hybrid roles into more in-office roles, which holds true for what we predicted.

It’s important to note that even when our clients have in-office requirements, they’re still pretty flexible with hires about working from other locations occasionally, or accommodating times when people may need to work from home out of necessity. Remote is definitely not going away. Check out our entire post about the return to work movement here .

Another one of our predictions was that we’d see a spike in executive and C-Suite hiring. In September, we asked our followers if they thought executive hiring was on the rise. 26% said it had already started, with another 49% saying they believed it would start in Q1 of 2024.

And we definitely saw a return to senior level hiring in Q1. Our team placed a number of roles like Founding Engineers and Heads of Client Engineering, and opened up senior roles like VPs of Engineering, Executive Sales roles, Heads of departments, and more Founding Engineers.

We’re predicting this trend to continue throughout Q2 and Q3, as companies who hired ?junior and mid-level talent in 2023 need to find senior leaders to guide their team.

Our three top tips for acing phone screens and questions to prep for ??

First impressions matter, and there’s never a better time to make a great first impression than a phone screen.

While you may be tempted to save your interview prep time for onsite interviews, don’t underestimate the power of having a great 15-20 minute first interview! If you’re excited about the role, being well-prepared is one of the best ways to move to the top of the list.

Some of our tips for acing a phone screen (trust us, as recruiters, we can tell if you’ve done these, even if its not a video call):

  • Write down basic questions in advance. Write down any basic questions you have regarding compensation, general responsibilities, remote vs. in-person structure, or other big-picture questions you want to confirm. Spend 15 minutes or so on this.
  • Be ready to answer basic questions about your resume: Review the resume you submitted before the call so it’s fresh in your memory. If the interviewer asks for more detail on a specific bullet point - you want to be ready to provide more context.
  • Have your materials ready: Keep a copy of your resume and any notes (like on recent projects, or things you think the recruiter may ask about based on the job description) nearby. You can refer to them if necessary.

Some common interview questions to prep for during the first interview stage include:

1. ? ? Why are you looking for a new position currently?

2. ? ? What are you looking for in your next position?

3. ? ? Is there a specific type of company or industry that you're targeting?

4. ? ? What size of teams have you worked on?

5. ? ? What is your ideal company size?

6. ? ? What technologies and coding languages do you know?

7. ? ? Are you interviewing with any other companies?

8. ? ? What are your salary expectations?

9. ? ? What’s your ideal timeline and start date for beginning a new job?
