Emotional State of Mind - Influence of Subconscious

Emotional State of Mind - Influence of Subconscious

Let us discuss some of the famous superstitions. The god of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar wore his left pad before his right. Rahul Dravid on the other hand believed that wearing his right pad before his left pad gave him good luck.?Saurav Ganguly carried a photo of his Guru in his pocket, something he believed brought him success. Sehwag decided to wear a numberless jersey instead of 44 which paid rich dividends for him. The list is endless. All the cricketers we named here are known for their hard work, commitment and skills. Then why did they wear left or right pad first? Imagine what would happen to a batsman when he is at the ground and suddenly realises he has forgotten his favorite yellow handkerchief. (Please share if you remember such associations)

I was watching Kartik Aaryan starrer ‘Shehzada’. Paresh Rawal pushes the nurse accidently (or intentionally). She falls and goes into coma. Paresh Rawal starts limping saying that he had a nasty cramp and limps in the entire movie. There was no physical damage to his feet.

Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Super30’. Poor students write an exam but they score less than the students from affluent class, though they had the answers. They didn’t see themselves fitting in with the affluent class makes them score less marks. Doesn’t that sound irrational. (Please share if you remember such associations)

Not really irrational because it is connected with our state of mind. Imagine Mr. Y breaking up with Ms. X. They had a heated conversation over the phone. Both are heartbroken. Mr. Y has an important client presentation. He is already late because of the argument. His emotions due to breakup conversations are running high. He is an excellent driver but can he use his skills to his optimum? Obviously, No. Because he is not in the right frame of mind.

We talk about sportsperson being out of form. Skills are there but the form (state of mind) is not right. Batsman A gets out on googly bowled by Bowler B couple of times. Batsman A is once again facing bowler B with the fact that he was unable to read googly of bowler B. What will be his state of mind? He can be plagued with self-doubt.

To perform at our optimum, we need skills and we need the right state of mind. The superstitions are associated with right state of mind. They feel confident (comfortable) when they are carrying a red handkerchief or picture of his guru. A sports like cricket is highly unpredictable. Things may not go as planned after all the efforts and sweat. Stakes involved are huge. Everyone is under pressure to give their best all the time. In such unpredictability, they look at some anchor or subconscious support.

State of mind is a person's mood and the effect that mood?has on his thinking and behaviour. A person cannot perform at his optimum even if he has skills, if he lacks right state of mind. Since state of mind is an emotional state, it is at subconscious level. (Subconscious or unconscious stores emotions).

We spoke about second most common fear, fear of public speaking. Employee A is doing excellent work. He is all green in his scorecard. He is appreciated for his hard work by all. His seniors give me an opportunity to present his way of working so that he can inspire his colleagues. Senior management team will also be present. This is a great opportunity for him to showcase his talent. But A is extremely nervous. He has never spoken in front of so many people. He is overwhelmed by the audience. As soon as he thinks of speaking, he can feel his knees shaking. He knows there is nothing to worry about (logic by conscious mind) but he has no control over his reaction. It is automatic. (Subconscious mind effect). If pushed he may speak half heartedly and lose the opportunity or refuse to be a part of such meeting.?

We can create an emotional state we desire. Try this. Sit with our elbows resting on the desk, your palms pressed on your forehead, your shoulders stopping down. A posture of a person dejected, loser? Start thinking about all those mistakes you made and losses you incurred because of them. Stay there for few seconds and you will notice a sense of dejection and hopelessness into your body. You will find it difficult to stay in this posture for too long. Mind affects body and body affects mind. When you are sick physically, you become emotionally weak as well.?

When you want to feel confident before a meeting or an interview, prepare yourself thoroughly (Skills are essential). Close your eyes and think about the successes you had in your life (however small they may be). Think about the feeling you had when you were successful. See the appreciation in the eyes of your friends and your loved ones. Adopt the posture that is associated with confidence for you. See yourself answering or presenting yourself confidently. See the divine blessing you for success. Feel the surge of positivity in you. We will discuss about power of imagination in our upcoming articles.

There is a technique in NLP, ‘Anchoring” which can be used to create the desired state.

Thank you.
