The State of Leadership in the UK

The State of Leadership in the UK

In March 2022 we surveyed just over 1,000 employees including managers across 3 sectors: Financial Services, Manufacturing and Engineering. We asked them questions about leaders in the UK in twelve categories including business CEOs.?

Findings?

When it came to having?confidence?in leaders, military leaders scored highest and the lowest was national government and civil servants. Business was 3rd?out of the 12.?

On?honesty and integrity, the highest was NGOs, business CEOs dropped to 9th?with the lowest being national government. This is clearly an issue for business.?

In regard to leaders?inspiring loyalty and engagement?the highest was the armed forces, business was 8th?out of 12 below leaders in the NHS, Police and Education and CEOs of NGOs. The lowest two???national government and civil service leaders.

What did they say about the state of leadership in the UK?

·???????Over 80% did not believe our present leaders could resolve the issues/challenges we face today in the UK

·???????75% believed we have a leadership crisis in the UK today?

·???????Nearly 90% believed there was a global leadership crisis especially when it came to action on big issues

·???????Nearly 80% believed that unless leadership improved in the UK we would decline as a nation.?

·???????Over 90% said leaders were out of touch with the average person

·???????Almost 100% said more should be done to develop leadership in schools, the workplace and communities.?

·???????Finally, over 85% believed they had leadership talent though fewer than half had ever attended any form of leadership development.?

What do employees want from leaders??

92% ability to communicate?

91% honesty and integrity

91% trust

86% decisiveness?

87% open mindedness?

80% empathy

79.6% to co-operate with others?

The Leaders Institute believes that the future of our nation hinges upon the development of leaders rather than managers drawn from a wider selection than at present including those who have been traditionally under-represented in leadership roles.?

This is the background to our national initiative Leadership UK, a year -long series of rigorous professional development for up to 100 leaders and potential leaders from right across the UK, commencing September 2022. Unlike courses and coaching, this is based on how individuals actually learn leadership.??(See article The Future of Leader Development)?
