State of the Infrastructure Industry 2023
Re-flow Field Management
Field management software that puts you in control, and your team to work.
Infrastructure has been experiencing big challenges in recent years, including:
At Re-flow, we're identifying the needs and requirments based on direct feedback from existing clients. This feedback has enabled us to improve our software around compliance, safety and communication, but it's also given us an awareness around the trends from the industry landscape. That's why, for the last few years we've been able to publish our, State of the Infrastructure Industry report.
The 2023 report looks at three key areas:
We’ve aggregated data from sector reports and articles - in one place, so you don't have to spend hours searching for it.
1. Workload and employment figures are down.
Like many sectors, there has been a drop in employment and activity across the sector. There has been less activity in highways and traffic management, civil engineering, and rail because of Covid-19. There are signs of a slow recovery in the rail sector, but the skills shortage remains a big issue. Young people are currently not interested in a career in the industry, with a large number ruling out working in the industry altogether.
2. Costs and wages are up
Much like your weekly shopping, the cost of materials and labour has risen dramatically in the last year. There are lots of factors affecting this, one being the highest rate of inflation for the last 40 years. On a positive note, at the time of writing, the UK is on course to half the rate of inflation this year.
There have been supply chain issues due to the war in Ukraine which have raised costs. Some materials are starting to become more reasonably priced, but more energy-intensive materials are likely to remain expensive as the war continues.

3. The industry is safer than others...
...but there is still work to do. A recent HSE report suggests that the infrastructure industry is performing well, compared to similar industries when it comes to workforce safety, but there are still a large number of preventable accidents occurring.
For example, a leading highways company was fined £4.4 million this year for failing to prevent an on-site incident on two separate occasions. The HSE has introduced new practices to help combat the number of incidents, but this means that the level of scrutiny is likely to increase.
4. There's work to do to reach Net Zero.
Recent data shows that the wider construction industry was responsible for 18% of large particle pollution (pollution that can irritate eyes, nose and throat) and that in urban areas, this rose to 30%. The government have started making moves to improve these stats, including supporting the creation of a new decision at National Highways that looks at environmental sustainability.
These are just some of the points covered in the full report. Expect to find lots of information and stats relevant to the industry you live and breathe.
