State of DevOps 2023 - report by DORA

The Accelerate State of DevOps Report 2023 is the ninth annual report from the DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) team at Google Cloud. The report is based on a survey of over 36,000 professionals worldwide, and it provides insights into the practices and capabilities that organizations use to drive successful software delivery and operational performance.

The report can be succinctly divided into the following sections -

DevOps is becoming more mainstream

  • The number of organizations that are using DevOps practices has increased significantly in recent years.
  • In 2023, 84% of organizations reported that they are using at least one DevOps practice, compared to 63% in 2018.
  • The most common DevOps practices are continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD), used by 80% of organizations, followed by infrastructure as code (75%) and monitoring and observability (70%).

DevOps is associated with better business outcomes

  • High-performing DevOps organizations are more likely to achieve their business goals, such as releasing new products and features more quickly and improving customer satisfaction.
  • High-performing DevOps organizations outperform low-performing organizations on a number of key metrics, including lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and mean time to recovery.
  • For example, high-performing DevOps organizations are 2.3 times more likely to deploy code more than once per week than low-performing DevOps organizations.
  • High-performing DevOps organizations are also 2.6 times more likely to achieve or exceed their revenue goals than low-performing DevOps organizations.

Culture is essential for DevOps success

  • High-performing DevOps organizations have a culture of learning, collaboration, and experimentation.
  • They also have a culture of psychological safety, where people feel comfortable taking risks and learning from their mistakes.
  • For example, high-performing DevOps organizations are 2.7 times more likely to have a culture of learning and experimentation than low-performing DevOps organizations.
  • High-performing DevOps organizations are also 2.9 times more likely to have a culture of psychological safety than low-performing DevOps organizations.

Recommendations

  • Adopt CI/CD to automate the software development and delivery process.
  • Use infrastructure as code to automate the provisioning and management of infrastructure.
  • Invest in monitoring and observability tools to track the performance and health of applications and infrastructure.
  • Organizations that use cloud computing are more likely to adopt DevOps practices and culture, and they are also more likely to achieve better business outcome? with flexible infrastructure.
  • The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is also associated with higher DevOps performance.
  • Create a culture of learning, collaboration, and experimentation.
  • Foster a culture of psychological safety.
  • Focus on user-centric design.
