The State of British Military Families in 2024: A Deep Dive into Spouse Experiences
New research from RFS on British Military Spouses Survey 2024 has unveiled crucial insights into the challenges and opportunities facing military families today. As we analyse the data from this comprehensive survey, several key themes emerge that deserve our attention and action.
The Modern Military Family Profile
Our research reveals that today's military families are experiencing significant transitions. With 74.6% of respondents being spouses of serving personnel and 18.6% connected to veterans, we're seeing a diverse community with deep roots – nearly 73% have been part of the military community for over a decade.
The demographic makeup shows a mature, experienced community, with 78% of respondents between ages 35-54. This suggests a wealth of professional experience that could be better leveraged in the workforce.
Employment: The Ongoing Challenge
Perhaps the most striking finding concerns employment. While 67.8% of military spouses are currently employed (30.5% full-time, 37.3% part-time), a significant 28.8% are actively seeking work. The barriers they face are substantial:
These statistics highlight a critical need for more flexible employment solutions and remote work opportunities that can accommodate the mobile military lifestyle.
The Digital Shift in Support Services
A compelling insight from our research is the strong preference (66.1%) for virtual services over in-person support. This digital inclination presents an opportunity to revolutionise how we deliver support to military families, particularly given that:
Community Connection: A Growing Concern
The data reveals a concerning disconnect within military communities. One-third (33.9%) of respondents feel very disconnected from their local military community. The primary culprits?

Foreign and Commonwealth Integration
Our survey also highlighted specific challenges facing Foreign and Commonwealth community members, with 16.9% struggling with qualification recognition and 11.9% facing visa and immigration challenges. This underscores the need for specialised support for international military spouses.
Looking Forward: Opportunities for Change
The survey points to several clear areas where organisations and employers can make a difference:
Call to Action
As we reflect on these findings, it's clear that supporting military spouses isn't just about providing services – it's about reimagining how we can create sustainable, flexible solutions that acknowledge their unique challenges while leveraging their considerable skills and experience.
For employers, this represents an opportunity to tap into a skilled, adaptable workforce. For service providers, it's a call to embrace digital transformation in support delivery. And for policymakers, it's evidence of the need for more flexible, family-friendly military policies.
We invite organisations across sectors to consider how they can contribute to supporting this valuable community. Whether through remote work opportunities, mentorship programs, or digital community initiatives, there's a role for everyone in building a stronger support network for military families.
This article is based on the British Military Spouses Survey 2024. The survey represents responses from serving personnel spouses/partners (74.6%), veteran spouses/partners (18.6%), reservist spouses/partners (3.4%), and Foreign and Commonwealth community members (3.4%).

Careers are stopped in their tracks and sometimes ended all together It can often result in medical professionals losing their registrations for example. Yes this is being discussed at ministerial level, and it’s a complex scenario, but if this step too could be made many more companies would be able to tap into the talent pool of Spouses abroad. Thierr are many more spouses based in the UK than abroad though, so still a fantastic source of passionate, professional people to support and employ.
