State of AI in Change Management

I don't think it's a stretch to say that change management is a conservative profession. It's going to be difficult to create a strategy for AI because it simply moves too fast.

We've created an ongoing State of AI in Change Management survey that is open and free for everyone. So far if you ask our bot what change agents are skeptical of with respect to AI, here's the analysis by GPT-4:

  1. Understanding and Adoption by Non-Technical People: There's skepticism about whether non-technical people will understand that AI can reduce the need for large change teams and allow change agents to work more efficiently.
  2. Skill Building Among Experienced Professionals: Some are skeptical about the skill building required by experienced change managers to effectively use AI.
  3. Organizational Maturity and Strategic Thinking: There is skepticism regarding the maturity of organizations, especially in terms of strategic thinking, data foundation, and the move to tooling. The concern is that organizations might see AI tools as a catch-all solution without adequately investing in the education and skills of their workforce, including critical thinking.
  4. Accuracy and Relevance: Skepticism exists about the ability of AI to learn the context and its accuracy. There are concerns about whether the time spent on AI-driven activities like creating emails or processing data is worthwhile.
  5. AI's Role in Enhancing Skills: Some believe that AI will not replace human intelligence but merely reinforce existing skills.
  6. Contextual Understanding in Organizational Change Management (OCM): There are doubts about AI's ability to understand the specific contexts of stakeholder groups in OCM, emphasizing the importance of context in change management.
  7. Effectiveness and New Skill Requirements for Change Managers: Questions are raised about the effectiveness of AI in change management and what new skills change managers might need to acquire to use AI efficiently.

The more people who add to it, the smarter it will become. This is in its infancy now so head over to leanchange.org/ai and have your say!

After that, check out our recent podcast about 6 things that you can use AI for in change management right now.
