Startups and Developers are Rushing to use OpenAI's GPT-3

Hey Guys,

I write everyday at AISupremacy and you can sign up here . Without community support, I cannot do this much longer.

OpenAI, the San Francisco, California-based lab developing AI technologies including large language models, announced on December, 14th, 2021 the ability to create custom versions of?GPT-3, a model that can generate human-like text and code.

  • You can now customize GPT-3 for your Application.

OpenAI is enabling developers and startups new ways to create value. These AI Applications are delivering GPT-3–powered search, conversation, text completion, and other advanced AI features through their API.

This means developers can now train GPT-3 on their data. Many have touted GPT-3 as the next-generation artificial intelligence technology that will usher in a new breed of applications and startups (think India, Brazil, Nigeria, Indonesia). Since GPT-3’s release, many developers have found interesting and innovative uses for the language model.

The OpenAI App Era is Here

A group at?Georgetown University have shown?how GPT-3 can be used to augment misinformation as well. GPT-3 does however come at an opportune time for OpenAI and its partner Microsoft.

The pandemic has accelerated the world’s digital transformation, pushing businesses to become more reliant on software to streamline their processes. As a result, the demand for natural language technology is now higher than ever — particularly in the enterprise B2B industry.

In late November, 2021 OpenAI removed the waitlist for the application programming interface to GPT-3, its flagship language model. Now, any developer who meets the conditions for using the OpenAI API can apply and start integrating GPT-3 into their applications.?GPT-3 based Apps are coming in 2022.

Developers can use fine-tuning to create GPT-3 models tailored to the specific content in their apps and services, leading to ostensibly higher-quality outputs across tasks and workloads, the company says. It threatens to change how the internet works and how content is created, proliferated and automated.

So how is OpenAI’s best product scaling so far? GPT-3 has been publicly available since 2020 through the OpenAI API; as of March, OpenAI?said?that GPT-3 was being used in more than 300 different apps by “tens of thousands” of developers and producing 4.5 billion words per day. Microsoft with Azure will also have ways to monetize the technology in its partnership where Microsoft gave $1 Billion to OpenAI (back in?July, 2019).

Microsoft and OpenAI chose to work together based on “shared principles on ethics and trust,” according to the release. Customers will be able to automate much of the content on the internet eventually with GPT-3 and competing technologies.

Microsoft's AI Ambitions Will Find Fruition in 2022-2025

Built by OpenAI, GPT-3 and its fine-tuned derivatives, like?Codex,?can be customized to handle applications that require a deep understanding of language, from converting natural language into software code to summarizing large amounts of text and generating answers to questions.

Several startups have declared that they will be using GPT-3 to build new or augment existing products. The new GPT-3 fine-tuning capability enables customers to train GPT-3 to recognize a specific pattern for workloads like content generation, classification, and text summarization within the confines of a particular domain.

Microsoft’s first GPT-3-powered product provides important hints about the business of large language models and the future of the tech giant’s deepening relation with OpenAI. Microsoft’s acquisition of?Nuance in the AI of Healthcare is being reviewed?by the UK antitrust watchdog. Clearly Microsoft has ambitions in enterprise AI.

“According?to Gartner, 80% of technology products and services will be built by those who are not technology professionals by 2024. This trend is fueled by the accelerated AI adoption in the business community, which sometimes requires specifically tailored AI workloads.” However even the future of data scientists and DevOps professionals isn't clear.

As an amateur futurist I believe the machine will potentially disrupt even some skilled labor. Just as AI has the potential to automate some of the tasks white collar professionals do across a range of industries like Finance, Healthcare, Law, Government administration and Marketing. However, like the crypto metaverse and blockchain, this also creates new jobs and new hybrid roles.

For example, one customer, Keeper Tax, is using fine-tuned GPT-3 to interpret data from bank statements to help to find potentially tax-deductible expenses. The company continues to fine-tune GPT-3 with new data every week based on how their product has been performing in the real world, focusing on examples where the model fell below a certain performance threshold.

What will the data-augmented startups of GPT-3 prove to the world? That new AI technologies are pushing the boundaries of automation and an improved efficiency and productivity in the digital transformation revolution.

Microsoft has positioned itself to be one of the winners in this movement. It appears Enterprise AI is becoming more prominent. Ecosystems that deal with startups like Shopify, Block, Lightspeed Commerce and others will need to find new ways to integrate AI with Apps that can enable people to manage their startups and new businesses more easily.

The Era of AI Apps Thanks to OpenAI

The pace of improvement even with GPT-3 appears impressive for OpenAI. For example, OpenAI claims that the instruct models, which share the base GPT-3’s natural language generation abilities, are now more adept at understanding and following directions like “Explain the moon landing to a six-year-old in a few sentences.”

  • Just running a single command in the?OpenAI?command-line tool with a file will start training the custom model and make it available immediately in API.
  • Developers can use an existing dataset of virtually any size and shape or incrementally add data based on user feedback. According to the company, customisation can help in increasing correct outputs from 83% to 95%.

There’s a certain optimism of the value cases and automation possible here. According to?the Microsoft Blog, “For instance, the new AI-powered features will allow an employee building an e-commerce app to describe a programming goal using conversational language like ‘find products where the name starts with “kids.”’

  • Developers can improve the reliability of output and offer more consistent results by customizing GPT-3.
  • Startups can thus fine-tune products and improve the digital maturity of their products and sales funnels by customizing GPT-3.

“We believe that by opening access to these models via an easy-to-use API, more developers will find creative ways to apply AI to a large number of useful applications and open problems,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post.

How valuable could customized AI apps become in the 2020s? The GPT-3 fine-tuning capability can also lead to cost savings, because customers can count on a higher frequency of higher-quality outputs from fine-tuned models compared with a vanilla GPT-3 model.

It’s very promising news for OpenAI and Microsoft. In the summer of 2021, OpenAI partnered with Microsoft to launch the?Azure OpenAI Service,?an offering designed to give enterprises access to GPT-3 and its derivatives along with security, compliance, governance, and other business-focused features.

The Cloud is powering new AI-as-a-Service enterprise features each year and new competitors to OpenAI are emerging all over the world. It’s a game-changer moment for how artificial intelligence is being implemented in the real world.
