Acko: Disrupting India’s Traditional Insurance Space

For the longest time, India’s insurance market has been dominated by traditional players like LIC, known for cumbersome processes, paperwork-heavy transactions, and opaque pricing structures.

However, In 2016, Varun Dua and Ruchi Deepak founded Acko , India’s first fully digital insurance company, to address these pain points. They identified two core issues: complex procedures and non-transparent pricing. To tackle this, Acko introduced a 0 Commission Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) Model, simplifying insurance by eliminating middlemen and offering affordable, easy-to-understand policies online.??

Acko’s platform provides bite-sized insurance products such as mobile protection and ticket cancellations, alongside comprehensive auto and health coverage.?

As of 2024, Acko has become one of India’s most trusted startups, crossing ?2,000 crore in revenue and cutting losses by 9%. Its innovation, transparency, and simplicity have attracted investor confidence, positioning Acko as a key player reshaping Indian insurance.????

RBI Sees 52% Spike in Overseas Reserves Income for June Quarter

In the June quarter of 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) earned $4.1 billion from its overseas reserves, a 52% jump from $2.7 billion last year. This boost came from higher returns on U.S. treasury bonds, interest on deposits with other central banks, and rising gold prices.??

The RBI mainly invests its foreign currency in safe bonds like those from the U.S. government, deposits with central banks, and a small portion with foreign banks. While this income is strong now, experts warn that it could slow down if bond yields drop further.

One standout was the RBI’s gross dollar sales, which soared to $49.1 billion in Q1 FY25, compared to just $4 billion the year before. A change in accounting rules helped make these transactions more profitable.??

Going forward, the RBI’s income could depend on how gold prices and U.S. bond yields change, with these factors potentially influencing its future dividend payouts.??
