Startup Denmark: A Gateway for Indian Startups to Denmark
Startup Denmark is a visa scheme specifically designed for non-European Union (EU), non-European Economic Area (EEA), and non-Swiss citizens. It offers an opportunity for talented individuals from outside these regions to establish their entrepreneurial ventures in Denmark. This initiative aims to attract innovative minds and foster economic growth in the country. If you have a promising business plan, you can apply for a residence and work permit as a self-employed entrepreneur through Startup Denmark.
Process
To initiate the application process, you must submit a comprehensive business plan that will be evaluated by an independent expert panel. The panel thoroughly reviews your proposal, assessing its feasibility and potential impact. Upon approval of your business plan, you become eligible to apply for a residence and work permit. The permit is initially granted for a period of up to two years, with the possibility of extension for three-year increments.
Eligibility and Criteria
Eligibility for the Startup Denmark scheme is limited to self-employed individuals who are non-EU, non-EEA, and non-Swiss citizens. Therefore, entrepreneurs from India are eligible to participate in this program. It's important to note that up to three non-EU/EEA citizens can collaborate and submit a business plan as a team. If the panel approves the plan, each team member must apply individually for a residence and work permit from the immigration authorities.
Furthermore, a non-EU/EEA citizen can also submit a business plan in conjunction with EU/EEA citizens if they are part of the startup team. However, EU/EEA citizens are not required to obtain residence and work permits for Denmark due to the EU rules on free movement of persons and services.

Active ownership is a crucial requirement for participation in the Startup Denmark scheme. As an applicant, you must hold a significant stake in the company and actively contribute to its operations. Your presence should be deemed necessary for the establishment and success of the business. If you only have economic or financial interests in the venture, such as being a shareholder, you are not eligible to obtain a permit under the Startup Denmark program. In short, you should be active driver of the business and not just a passive shareholder.
Financing
Startup Denmark does not provide direct financing to entrepreneurs. Instead, it offers residence and work permits to approved applicants. It is the responsibility of the entrepreneurs to secure the necessary capital for their ventures and sustain themselves financially. However, Denmark does offer various public and private funding schemes that eligible businesses can apply for. The program encourages entrepreneurs to explore these opportunities and leverage available resources.
Financial self-sufficiency is another vital aspect of the application process. Applicants must demonstrate that they possess sufficient funds to support themselves and their accompanying family members for the first year in Denmark. The required amount varies based on the circumstances. For instance, if you are in Denmark without any family, you need to provide documentation showing enough bank balance to fend for yourself. If your spouse and children are accompanying you, the required amount increases accordingly. Adequate documentation, such as bank statements, must be provided to validate your financial capability.
The Startup Denmark program is an official initiative developed jointly by the Ministry of Industry, Business, and Financial Affairs and the Ministry of Immigration and Integration in Denmark.
