?New LinkedIn features in the past month

?? Two new fields have been added to image posts uploaded via the app. We’ve been able to add links for a while but now we can also tag a person and include a link to a company page.

?? The My Network section has been changed from ‘People I follow’ to ‘Following and Followers’, making it easier to find your follower number and to see who your latest followers are.

?? About this profile

LinkedIn is rolling out a new safety feature to help protect us from fake profiles. About this profile tells you:

? When the person joined LinkedIn

? When they last updated their profile photo and contact details

? Whether they have a ‘verified’ phone number and email address

Read more here.

?? Auto captioning of videos

This will break down a significant barrier for many who don’t publish videos because of the cost or needing a third-party app to create subtitles. Currently being rolled out, this new feature will allow caps to be edited before posting. Less than half of all videos have captions, yet those that do significantly outperform those without in terms of both reach and engagement.

?? Notification bell [??] added to pages

Followers of your company page will be more likely to see your posts if the bell is activated. Or so we hope.

?? Follow on LinkedIn

Not to be confused with the recent new ‘Follow me on LinkedIn’, this is another feature only for those using Creator mode. With this plugin, people can instantly follow you on LinkedIn without having to go to your profile to do so. It goes on web pages, emails, YouTube etc – anywhere you want to encourage people to follow you on LinkedIn.

?? New job features 1: Create job alert

If you want to work for a particular company (or companies) you can now set an alert for new jobs when they are posted on their page. You’ll find these under the Jobs tab.

?? New job features 2: Standardised Accessibility Job Titles

If you have Open to Work displayed on your profile you can add job roles under an Accessibility heading, if this is an area you work in. LinkedIn is currently actively working to make the platform more accessible for those with disabilities and this is one of the new features in support.

LinkedIn Algorithm Report summary

Last week, Richard van der Blom released his 4th annual report the LinkedIn algorithm. Some of its key points are:

?? Of LinkedIn’s 875 million members, just over 5% create content (a significant rise).

?? Only the first action you take on a post – usually a like – has any effect on reach or engagement. We need to change from liking first and commenting second to just commenting which is quite a habit to break.

?? Posting more than once within 18 hours restricts reach.

?? The best performing formats are document posts (slideshows), polls, multi-image posts and the new carousel posts.

?? The poorest performing post formats are external link posts, celebrate an occasion, newsletters and articles.

?? Text in posts is best kept to between 1200 and 1600 characters.

?? Including external links in posts still reduces reach.

?? Shares are more effective than they’ve been in the past but there’s no value to you in reposting.

?? More people are holding LinkedIn Lives where engagement is higher than for native video.

?? Newsletter subscriber growth, edition reach and engagement rates have all dropped dramatically.

?? Optimum weekly post numbers on company pages are 4-5 and using a variety of post formats helps.

The report contains more than 50 pages of fascinating insights into what’s working on LinkedIn and how to improve your LinkedIn marketing. It is well worth a read and can be found at this link.

Something else from the algorithm report you might find interesting is around the content that works well on company pages. Essentially, the best types of page content are personal stories, employer branding, social responsibility and thought leadership. The worst, not surprisingly, are product or service related. Given that organic reach on page posts has plummeted this year, any additional help we can give them is to be encouraged.
