Welcoming the Hon. Minister of Finance, at the time, Mr. Mahboob ul Haq to our College event as President of the Student Government.

Starting Strong: 10 Tips to Thrive in College and Beyond.

A few decades ago, I was in your shoes—navigating the excitement and challenges of college life. While a lot has changed since then, the core lessons I learned and the habits I developed are just as relevant today as they were back then. The skills I gained through academics, extracurricular activities like writing, sports, drama, coordinating events, and engaging in student government have been invaluable throughout my career. Here’s what I’d like to share with you as you begin (or return to) your higher education journey this academic year:

1. Explore Campus Clubs and Activities

Humber Polytechnic offers a wide variety of student clubs and activities that are worth exploring.

During my college years, getting involved in student government, drama, and organizing events was transformative. These experiences not only allowed me to express my creativity but also helped me develop leadership and teamwork skills that have been crucial in my career.

At Humber, joining clubs or even starting your own club can similarly enhance your college experience and open doors to lifelong friendships and professional networks. There is a wide variety of student clubs that cater to different interests and passions. Some examples include the IGNITE Anime Club, The Dance Club, The Chess Club, IGNITE Gaming Club, the Muslim Students’ Association (MSA), and the IGNITE Real Estate Club amongst others. These clubs provide great opportunities to meet new people, develop skills, and make the most of your college experience. For more information on these and other clubs, you can visit the IGNITE Clubs.

2. Prioritize Mental Health

Balancing multiple roles during college can be challenging, and taking care of your mental health is vital. I learned early on that it’s okay to seek help when needed. Humber offers excellent resources, including counselling services at the Wellness Centres on both campuses. Whether you’re feeling stressed or just need someone to talk to, these services are available to support you. Prioritizing your mental well-being will help you navigate college life more effectively. Here is where you can explore and reach out for these options.

Throwback 2: Back in the day, with limited resources, we made sure to take fun breaks with friends—relaxing under the trees, music playing from our cars, and cups of chai to ease our stress!

3. Stay Physically Active

Staying active was my way of managing stress and maintaining focus. Whether it was through sports or just regular exercise, physical activity played a key role in my overall well-being and still does. Humber’s Athletics Centres at the North and Lakeshore campuses provide facilities like gyms, swimming pools, and fitness classes. Engaging in regular physical activity not only keeps you fit but also boosts your mental health and energy levels, helping you stay on top of your game. We are blessed to be housed near the Colonel Samuel Smith Park (Lakeshore campus) and the Arboretum (North campus) so even a walk by the serene lakeshore or a stroll in the beautiful gardens can be a great reset.

Throwback 4: Try running a 100-meter dash in this and winning! L-R: Tazeen Wasti, Sahar Razi, and myself.

4. Develop a Study Routine Early

Having a consistent study routine was crucial for me, especially when balancing academics with extracurricular activities like writing and event creation.

Humber’s libraries at both campuses offer quiet study spaces and access to a wealth of resources that can help you stay focused. Establishing a routine early on will help you manage your coursework effectively, leaving you time to participate in other activities. Humber libraries are more than just books! Do check out the Idea Lab and the Humber Archives too.

Throwback 5: Being academically strong pays off in the long run. Stack your habits early on—there's a time for play and a time for work. (Receiving the Annual All-Round Best Student Award from Dr. Mahboob ul Haq was worth it!).

5. Build a Social Network

Connecting with others is one of the most valuable aspects of college life. During my time in college, I made lifelong friends and professional connections through student government, clubs, writing groups, and event planning.

At Humber, there are numerous opportunities to build your network, whether through the Humber Muslim Students’ Association (MSA), IGNITE Gaming Club, or other cultural and interest-based clubs. These connections will not only enrich your college experience but can also be invaluable in your career. Try to explore the campus, walk around and see what it has to offer, be curious and be driven. Don't just come to class, have a immersive full experience if you can. Being an entrepreneur and a CfE mentor myself, one of my favourite places on campus is the Longo Centre for Entrepreneurship (CfE), please do go and explore the amazing opportunities for your ideas, this is not just for the Business students it's for everyone! Who knows you might get up to 10K in funding for you business venture.

Throwback 6: In Pakistan, it's a tradition for juniors to throw 'Going Away' parties for graduates. Here we are hosting a fully sponsored event with dinner and awards. L-R: Tariq Jan and me presenting an award to one of the seniors, Aamir Khan.
Throwback 7: We’re not judging fashion here! It’s amazing that three decades have passed, yet we’re all still in touch—except for Saira Khan (3rd from left), who sadly passed away. College helps you make lifelong friends.

6. Manage Your Time Effectively

Effective time management is a skill that has served me well throughout my career. In college, balancing academics, sports, writing, and event creation taught me how to prioritize and manage my time.

Humber offers workshops through Student Learning Services (SLS) that can help you develop these skills. Learning to manage your time well will allow you to excel academically while still enjoying all that college life has to offer. It takes practice and discipline so it's good to start early and finish strong.

Throwback 8: Volunteer and participate in events to develop time management, teamwork, project management, negotiation skills, and more. The 'Executive Meet' Committee shown here post their Annual Gala event.

7. Eat Well and Stay Hydrated

Maintaining a healthy diet is essential for staying energized and focused. I often packed my own lunches, which not only helped me eat healthier but also kept me on track during busy days.

At Humber, you can support sustainability by bringing your own meals and using reusable containers. Joining the Humber Sustainability Club or becoming a Sustainability Ambassador is a great way to further engage with the college’s environmental initiatives.

8. Seek Academic Support When Needed

There were times when I needed extra help, and seeking academic support was crucial to my success. I was not shy to ask for help from my professors or from my classmates. Reach out to ask for help, you are stronger when you do and we are here to help.

Humber’s Writing and Math Centres offer tutoring and workshops that can help you overcome academic challenges. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of these resources; they are there to help you succeed.

Throwback 10: Remember, the main reason for being on campus is to learn. Don’t let seeking help to reach your goals be a barrier.

9. Explore Ontario’s Outdoor Spaces

Taking breaks in nature was something I found and still find incredibly refreshing and relaxing. Whether it was a quick walk or a weekend hike, connecting with nature helped me and my friends recharge.

Humber’s proximity to the Humber Arboretum and Colonel Samuel Smith Park offers you the opportunity to do the same. These beautiful outdoor spaces are perfect for unwinding and finding balance in your busy schedule. The winter wonderland with fairy lights on the skating trail is breathtakingly beautiful to experience!

Throwback 11: University trip to Nathiagali—exploring beautiful forest cottages with friends just before our final exam week!

Throwback 12: Group work and studying outdoors during a power outage was our power move!

10. Stay Organized and Prepared

Being organized was key to managing my various responsibilities during college. Once you get the hang of it by habit stacking it becomes second nature.

Humber’s Student Learning Services offers workshops on organization and study skills, and the campus bookstores have all the tools you need to stay on top of your schedule. Keeping yourself organized will help you manage your time effectively and reduce stress.

Throwback 13: Just two days before finals, and being an MC was still the way to go!

The habits I developed and the experiences I had during my time as a student—whether through academics, extracurricular activities, or simply taking care of my well-being—helped me build globally transferable skills. I was able to work and study in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, UK and Canada. I was able to immigrate and make a life for myself and my family and this all started way back in college.

These skills are still useful today and have supported me in my career, at my home, in my personal and social life. These skills helped me start the first women owned advertising agency in Pakistan in 1990 and jump started my entrepreneurial venture in Canada with my magazine London Link. I encourage you to take full advantage of everything Humber has to offer, knowing that the steps you take now will lay a strong foundation for your future. I will be your cheerleader and so will be my colleagues as we wait for you to cross the finish line and everything in between for your academic journey.

Welcome to the academic year 2024-2025! Let's be Builders of Excellence!

Throwback 14: Setting up real-life class projects with actual products at community events using our own investment and sales skills was stressful—but so worth it! Acing the MBA Capstone project through teamwork!
