Starting a Podcast: Follow our journey

Do you want to start a Podcast? We do! My co-host, Kels Davidson, and I have been working on this project of starting a Podcast for some time now, and we thought it would be interesting to share our journey with you as it unfolds. We're not quite there yet, but we'd like to take you on our journey and hear your thoughts.

If you've ever considered starting a podcast, you'll know that after a bit of research, it can seem quite simple, but simple is not the same as easy. After the initial hype and excitement, we had to start digging in and it quickly became clear that we had a lot to learn. Here's what we've learned thus far:

We debated about what our deepest internal motivations were and we landed on this: Creating a safe space to navigate employment.

  1. We have to start at the beginning, and that doesn't mean picking a name for our podcast. We immediately wanted to dive into what equipment to buy, sound and cover art to create, and all the other fun stuff, but realized that it's really important to understand our "why" first. We knew we had a lot of experience and a lot to talk about, many stories to share, and really needed to articulate why this medium was the way we wanted to create dialogue. We debated about what our deepest internal motivations were and we landed on this: Creating a safe space to navigate employment. If you're on LinkedIn you've probably had a job at some point or you're currently in the job market. Most people have been an employee at some point in their life. If you've been employed, you have a story worth sharing!
  2. Sharing stories is both engaging and how we learn best. Learning through examples has served us well and can make a big impact in how a message is delivered. Learning through experiences creates a window through which we can look at situations and explore. We're going to tell our own stories, but ultimately it'll be about your stories of the workplace - the good, the bad, and the funny. Stories have a tendency to take long and winding roads so we also realized that we needed some structure.
  3. Picking a format and flushing out the flow was by far the hardest and I'm not even sure we've nailed it yet. We want to keep it as real and relatable as possible, but want to avoid rambling and getting caught up with ourselves too much. We really want to highlight employee stories and help work through them, while protecting the anonymity of the ones brave enough to talk to us. As much as this is taboo territory, things can get sketchy at work sometimes and we want to help shine a light on how to navigate that.
  4. Defining our audience. If you've ever been employed, or you've ever been an employer, this podcast is for you! More to come in the weeks ahead.

Our mission is to be your advocate, to tell your story, and maybe offer some advice. It's hard to know who's in your corner when you're navigating office politics, crazy customers, and horrible bosses. Stay tuned for our next step as we move this thing along.

Do you have any advice or feedback, please leave us a comment below, we'd love to hear your thoughts!
