First off let me say congratulations! I believe starting a podcast in 2020 is a smart step in the right direction. Before I break down my 3 reasons to why this is the microphone you should pick up, allow me to say which mic it is. The most versatile microphone you need when starting your first podcast is the Sennheiser e835 Dynamic XLR microphone.

If that's all you wanted to know, you are welcome. But if you want my reasons to why here we go. I work on the production side of multiple podcasts. One I host based around filmmaking - The Secret Filmmakers Society, and one for the agency I work at called The Moment That Changed Everything. I have used various mics and came to the conclusion that the Sennheiser e835 is what I keep going back to.

Noise Cancelling - This isn't the correct term, but it is one that you will understand, even if you aren't an audio engineer. The e835 does a great job at rejecting noises that are not in its pick up pattern. Great job, not perfect! This microphone has a cardioid pickup pattern. Not going to go deep into the technical here but if you would like to learn more about pick up patterns, check out this article explaining various patterns.

Affordability - Price is a factor in any equipment choice. Although it shouldn't be your defining factor. Regardless, the price of the Sennheiser e835 is very affordable. At the time of writing this article, this mic is going for $130 CDN per microphone and $320 CDN for a 3 pack.

Rugged, Compact & Versatile - Now I am not saying throw it across the room for fun. But this microphone stands up well to falls and drops. When you hold it, you can tell that it is well built and sturdy. It comes in a small carrying pouch that you can throw into a bag and keeps the mount and foam filter together. And overall it is a great mic for a huge array of situations. If you are not sure that your podcast will be in a controlled environment each time, this is definitely the mic that will have your back!
