Project Fission...

I had the privilege of attending Foundry’s unveiling of Project Fission last week—a new virtual production solution set for its official launch at NAB.

It’s clear that an immense amount of time and effort has gone into this project. Project Fission is designed to integrate seamlessly into Foundry’s existing VFX pipeline, allowing artists to continue working within familiar workflows rather than shifting to a gaming platform—an often costly and time-consuming transition.

While I’m no Nuke or VFX expert, the response from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, particularly regarding its use of open standards and overall usability.

Competition drives innovation, and with Chaos Arena also entering the space in 2024, virtual production is poised for wider adoption as a viable filmmaking solution.

Unreal Engine remains a powerful but complex tool, fundamentally rooted in gaming. It will be fascinating to see how these new developments push storytelling forward in the evolving landscape of virtual production.
