Starting a New Role?

Starting a New Role?

Hey there,

The past months have been very intense for most of the people in transition, with so many layoffs, uncertainties on what’s ahead, disappointments and even trials and errors as one attempts to cope with their fears. There were, by no means, unique obstacles and uncertainties that none of us could have anticipated. Despite all of that, you've proven yourself resilient and powerful enough to rise above and even land a new role!?

Your dedication and unwavering spirit truly exemplify the superpower that emerges within us during tough times. This is something to celebrate and we’re glad to be part of this win. ?? Congratulations!

By now, you have probably passed a number of interviews successfully and are ready to start a new role next month or after holiday in September.

So what’s next?

You are starting a new role.

Whether you landed this role as an internal candidate or an external hire, you will want to ensure you set yourself up for success.

Aside from the tips mentioned in the graphic above, there are several categories of things to consider when starting a new role. These are the workplace setup (virtual, hybrid or in person), tactical and technical information, organisational information (staffing, organisational charts), purpose and goals in the position, relationship building and communications, personal branding (how you show up), expectations (short and long term) and company culture, etc.

Our world is officially operating in a hybrid model - something different than before the pandemic. Working from home is just as normal as working in an office. Balancing the two locations requires adjustment on everyone’s part. In your role, consider how your work location(s) will impact how you approach all the remaining topics in this resource.?Get familiar with what time zones the people you’ll be interacting with daily are in.?

Here are some key points to keep in mind before your first day on the job as well as during your first week or two:

Ask for support:?

Get to understand who to go to for support. In an office setting, you can turn around and ask a question about who the best source of information is. You won’t able to do this as easily in a virtual work setting. Remember to ask for help as soon as you need it, because it will be harder for others to recognise that you’re confused or need some extra information when working on a task or project remotely.

Seek further development:?

You were hired for your expertise, but don’t let that stop you from learning how and why your current team approaches things the way they do. Many people assume the expertise they possess means doing their work the way they have always done it. Be ready and open to new ways of doing things. While your experience and past accomplishments got you this far, it will be important to understand the unique approach of both the new company and the people you will work with.?

Get acquainted with new resources:?

What requests are you likely to have for materials or resources? When you meet each new person, try to understand their roles in the company and how you will be interacting with them. Ask about regularly scheduled meetings or shared files/project programmes that you should now be added to. Seek to gain actionable insights on your role, how you will work with your colleagues and how projects and tasks are approached at this company. Ask about the tools and software they use to do their work and to communicate with their colleagues and stakeholders.?

Communicate with enthusiasm:

When joining a group meeting, take a moment to introduce yourself. You can follow this same strategy when reaching out to people via email or message for the first time. Consider the communication culture of the address.

Focus and listen intently:

Pay attention to how each stakeholder interacts with you and how they operate. Paying attention to communication styles and needs of different personalities enables you to better relate to your new colleagues and form relationships faster.

Your first 90 days in a new position are vital to your overall success in the position. Three months is the standard grace period for new hires, so make sure you make the best of it by learning all you can about your role and your manager’s expectations.?

Starting a new position requires a great deal of dedication, energy and focus. When you are ready, take time to remind yourself where you want to be, how you would like to grow, learn and and develop an action plan on how you are going to get there via this new role.?

Remember, we are here to support you every step of the way,?so please don't hesitate to reach out.?You may also choose to join our accelerator group coaching program after summer holidays?to have clarity on your goals, manage time effectively and achieve more of what really matters.?Simply reply to this email with your name and a short note of your intention to join.?

Once again, congratulations on your new role! We believe in your ability to thrive in this exciting chapter of your life.

Wishing you all the best for your upcoming journey!?
