Starting a new job

Starting a new job

As I was walking out of the office on my last day, filled with gratitude for all the love and appreciation I have received over the past few weeks, I thought to myself: This couldn't have been more different than how I felt during my first few months here.

As a new employee, I remember feeling nervous, excited, anxious, and happy, all at the same time! I didn't know anything about the systems and processes and felt like an imposter because I couldn't significantly contribute. Today, I am proud of having substantially improved those very processes, and designed new ones to replace some of them.

Here is what helped me do that. Some thoughts that might help anyone starting a new position:

  • Learn intentionally: Take ownership of what you're going to be working on, and dive deep into it. You need to be able to understand and explain the intricacies and nuances before you can begin to make significant contributions. Ask questions.
  • Find a mentor: The best way to navigate a new organization is to find someone who has successfully done so, and is willing to help guide your journey. Their support and network will take you a long way.
  • Be customer-centric: I learned early on that the best solution is often not the most optimal/efficient one. It is the one that is best for your customer, whoever that might be.
  • Network and build relationships: Your relationships will take you farther than you could ever go alone. There is only so much you can do by yourself.
  • Seek out feedback: Check in with your manager at 30, 60, 90 day intervals and solicit feedback. You want to course-correct as early as possible. Define success indicators so you are not in for a surprise later.
  • Have fun: My own productivity and success at a job is directly linked to how happy I am doing it. Seek out projects that excite you, bring your personality to work, and enjoy the process itself.

I will be consciously using these as I begin my new role next week. If you believe there is anything I may have missed, or might benefit from knowing, please leave a comment!
