Starting a Business from Scratch: A Step-by-Step Guide
Anthony Franco
I launch, scale, and sell businesses (and help other founders do the same)
Step 1: The Billion-Dollar Idea It all begins with an idea. But not just any idea – a concept so innovative it makes regular ideas look like stone tablets. Think air-conditioned socks or teleporting coffee mugs. The sky's the limit, but preferably beyond.
Step 2: Market Research (Also Known as Espionage Lite) Next, conduct market research. This usually involves scrolling through competitors' social media at ungodly hours, fueled by the remnants of last night's pizza. It's like a treasure hunt, but instead of treasure, it's market trends.
Step 3: Naming the Business Choosing a name is vital. It should be as memorable as your first pet, but with more syllables. Go for something like "Quantum Quokka" or "Galactic Garbanzo." The more perplexing, the better.
Step 4: Crafting a Business Plan A business plan is essential. Fill it with graphs that go up and buzzwords like "synergize" and "paradigm shift." It's less about substance, more about style.
Step 5: Securing Investors Now, find investors. Use phrases like "next big thing" and "revolutionary." If they look confused, that means it's working.

Step 6: Launching the Product/Service Launch day should be unforgettable. Think of a marching band, skywriting, maybe even a celebrity endorsement. If the mayor isn't there, it's not big enough.
Step 7: Scaling Up Time to expand. This usually means hiring people who use words like "leverage" and "bandwidth" a lot. Nod and smile; it's all part of the process.
Step 8: The Inevitable Pivot When things don't go as planned, pivot. It's like saying, "Just kidding, here's what we’re really doing." It shows flexibility, or at least that's what you'll tell everyone.
Step 9: Going Public Eventually, consider an IPO. It's like letting the world decide what your sleepless nights and caffeine addiction are worth in real time.
Step 10: Writing the Tell-All Book Lastly, write a book about this whirlwind adventure. Skip the boring parts, like budget meetings and tax forms. Focus on the highlights, like that time you accidentally emailed the entire customer base in Klingon.
