From First Print to Professional Artist: How Printmaking Can Launch Your Creative Career

Starting from the ground up in any field can be daunting, but in the world of printmaking, it's a journey filled with creativity, learning, and growth. As someone who began exploring printmaking in college and has since made it a core part of my artistic career, I’ve seen firsthand how this art form can be both accessible and transformative.

1. Learning the Basics**

Like many artists, my journey began with curiosity. In the early days, I spent hours experimenting with simple materials: linoleum blocks, carving tools, and a brayer. The beauty of printmaking is that you can start small, with minimal investment, and still create something meaningful. It’s a medium that allows you to learn by doing, one print at a time.

2. Embracing the Process**

Printmaking is as much about the process as it is about the final product. As I moved from linocuts to more complex techniques like etching and screen printing, I discovered the importance of patience, precision, and persistence. Each step in the printmaking process offers a lesson—whether it’s mastering the technical aspects or learning to embrace the unexpected.

3. Joining a Community**

One of the most rewarding aspects of printmaking has been the sense of community. From joining the Bluegrass Printmakers’ Cooperative to participating in workshops and exhibitions, I’ve connected with artists who share my passion and push me to grow. The collaborative spirit in printmaking is unique, providing opportunities to learn from others and to share your own experiences.

4. Turning Passion into Profession**

For those looking to turn their love of printmaking into a career, it’s important to combine artistic skill with business acumen. My journey has led me to teach printmaking, demonstrate for Speedball Art Products, and exhibit my work in various venues. The key is to continually seek opportunities to showcase your work, connect with potential clients, and expand your skill set.

5. Rising to the Top**

Success in printmaking, as in any creative field, doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a result of dedication, learning from failures, and celebrating small victories. By staying committed to your craft, seeking out new challenges, and building a network of supporters, you can rise from a beginner to a respected professional in the art world.

Printmaking has been an integral part of my artistic journey, and I’m grateful for the path it has laid before me. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to take your skills to the next level, remember that every print you make is a step forward. Here’s to the creative journey and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
