Starting a Beer Business

CHEERS! ??

To a new week, to a new newsletter, and most importantly, to beer.

Now, I know we have touched on passion a few times, but can you imagine if your passion was beer?! I’m sure your passion is, in fact, beer, but so much so that you start your own successful business brewing your own?

I can picture it now, every day just brewing and tasting and selling the joy of the world. Going back, and doing some more tasting (the recipe needs to be perfect, of course). Adding some yeast, then onto another taste test (this one because of client feedback). But you can’t do this alone, so for the sake of the product (obviously), you must invite the boys around for some testers too because the supply needs to be adequately suited for beer pong (duh)…

Understandably, you can see why that’s pretty much where my beer business would end. Juandré, I can safely assume, did things a little differently.

His business started to take shape during lockdown, a time characterized by many as dark and, most importantly, boozeless. Although, you can’t fault people for their unhinged creativity that was demonstrated during a rather beer-thirsty time.

Enter pineapple beer

This meant that, while many of us had buckets of fermenting pineapples in our kitchen, Juandré was grafting on the real deal, the gold, the contraband of the COVID-19 era. While we were smoking no-name soil tobacco products, Juandré was making sure that every beer box had a perfectly measured handle to suit every size hand.

I like to imagine that it was a truly questionable glass of pineapple beer that actually inspired Juandré’s venture (spoiler alert, it’s not, but it is a uniquely South African inside joke which would’ve made for a cool business story).

All in all, amidst the gloom that COVID-19 threw at us, Juandré pulled through with a business that will continue to result in one less thirsty South African. We hope to see sales climb the same way they did when the alcohol ban was lifted.
