Starter for Ten - Time for celebrations
Eid Mubarak!?Last week marked the end of Ramadan and celebration of Eid. The arrival of Eid al-Fitr meant?a three-day celebration?this past weekend after an intense month of fasting, prayer, self-reflection and charity. We hope those who celebrated had a very happy and joyful Eid.
?There was also more to celebrate this past week, with three huge achievements across our portfolio, with Tribosonics, Locate Bio and CurrentBody all winning awards or new accreditations. CurrentBody is of course a Netflix sensation.
When 'Emily in Paris' hit our screens with the new season, Emily was 'wearing' CurrentBody's skin LED light therapy mask - something that was picked up in any number of magazines and news outlets around the world as the 'must- have' beauty item. So it's been a truly successful (and busy) time for?Laurence?and his team.?Read on for more details!
We hope you enjoy this week's roundup.
What is Gen z?
Gen Z is?currently the second-youngest generation, with millennials before and Generation Alpha after. Like every generation, Gen Z’s behaviors are shaped by how they grew up. Young people today have come of age in the shadow of climate doom, pandemic lockdowns and fears of economic collapse.
ZWhile there are substantive differences within the cohort known as Gen Z, there are a few commonalities its members share.
As the first real digital natives, Gen Zers—speaking generally—are?extremely online. Gen Zers are known for working, shopping, dating, and making friends online; in Asia, Gen Zers spend?six or more hours per day on their phones.
Book of the month:?This Is How They Tell Me the World Ends
The failure to terminate the email account of a former employee was enough for a critical US energy company to be floored by an attack by malevolent hackers. For a water company in Florida it was a case of poor housekeeping when it came to deploying a patch on faulty old software that led to disruptions in supplies.
?These are just two of the examples given by Nicole Perlroth in her book,?This Is How They Tell Me the World Ends,?of how small, seemingly innocuous holes or glitches in corporate IT networks and management policies can become the gateways to much bigger disasters, whose consequences can reach far beyond the realm of one company or institution.?Buy the book via Amazon.?
Earth day 2023 - small ways to adopt a greener lifestyle
领英推荐
Earth Day aims to encourage people to consider what they can do to create a greener future for the planet. Whether it’s eating more plant-based foods or using less plastic, there are many everyday actions we can take to live more sustainably.
Here are a few small changes that can make a big difference:
?? Shop locally and seasonally at farmers’ markets!
By reducing the distance food travels from farm to plate, we can slash our individual carbon footprints by 10% over a year. It also eliminates the chemicals agricultural systems require to grow vegetables unnaturally out of season- so get fresher, more nutritious produce. Even better, farmers' markets typically sell plastic-free fruit and veg, which can have a huge impact considering that food packaging is responsible for half of all plastic waste.
?? Dodge unnecessary plastic cutlery and boxes from takeaways!
Many eateries have started offering wooden utensils nowadays, but if you find your favourite food spot still won’t ditch plastic, pop a fork/knife from home in your bag. IKEA has a stunning and affordable bamboo line as well as glass food containers, which you can bring along with you before hitting the park. Lastly, don't forget to select the ‘no cutlery’ option on Deliveroo or UberEats if you don’t need it. Over 99% of plastics – including single-use forks, spoons, and knives – are made from chemicals sourced from fossil fuels called petrochemicals- not so tasty when you think about it.
?? Partake in meat-free Mondays!
Eating plant-based meals for one day a week can prevent around 100kgs of CO2 from entering the atmosphere annually. Reducing the number of greenhouse gases we emit is a top priority in mitigating the climate crisis. Since the meat industry accounts for 60% of the food production industry’s emissions each year, eating vegetarian for one day a week can make a big difference!
????Ditch plastic for reusable water bottles!
A major contributor to plastic pollution is single-use water bottles. In fact, 1 million plastic bottles are sold globally every minute, many of which are difficult to recycle. With so many reusable water bottle brands available and filtered water refill stations in train stations, airports, and even dotted around the streets of major cities - switching to a reusable bottle just makes sense.
