When fashion entrepreneur Vera Wang turned 40 in 1989, she left her corporate job. She felt there was more for her and went in search of it.
"People can get very trapped where they are." She proceeded slowly in deciding her direction at the time, then chose an entrepreneurial chapter. She has said it's been rewarding but not always easy building her company, which is now estimated to generate US$50 million annually.
Many of us have heard about the legendary business success of Ray Kroc, but few realize that he first got involved in and became the phenomenal growth engine of the McDonald's hamburger concept when he was 52. Prior to that, he had held a variety of jobs, including musician, ambulance driver and several outside salesmen roles.
Within three years after Kroc partnered with the McDonald brothers, they sold their 100 millionth burger. Six years later, Kroc purchased the exclusive rights to the name and system.
In 2010 at 74, Ernestine Shepherd was listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest female competitive bodybuilder in the world. She'll be 85 this June and continues bodybuilding (non-competitively).
She began the adventure at 56 and almost 30 years later is still reaping the rewards of this reinvention. Starting May 1, 2021, she'll be offering some weekly Saturday Zoom workouts. (I have no ties to her.)
These examples are a few of many in a group that continues to expand in a wide range of endeavors.
More and more of us hold the opportunity to have new exciting chapters as we live longer. We possess the good fortune to have more or different impact, contribution or creativity, if that's what we want.
Many individuals are multi talented and have numerous interests. Some of us emphasize different parts of ourselves at different times in our lives.
