One of the things I love most about the start of a new year is how it opens us up to new thinking, ideas, and potential. As we turn the page on the past and look ahead to the future, we have a unique opportunity to reimagine what's possible and embrace a mindset of boundless creativity. This spirit of renewal and possibility was on full display recently when my friend Lou shared an exciting new idea with me. As he began to describe the idea, I watched as his initial enthusiasm and grand vision slowly eroded under the weight of his own elaborations. With each new detail he added, he inadvertently created obstacles and complexities that clouded the original essence of the idea. His once-promising concept started to lose its luster, not because it lacked potential, but because he had shifted his focus from the transformative core of the idea to the potential roadblocks surrounding it. For me, this experience highlighted three key insights about nurturing ideas: the power of overcoming self-limiting beliefs, the importance of creating space for ideas to flourish, and the transformative potential of imagining a world without limitations.
To truly embrace the potential of new thinking and ideas, we must learn to recognize and overcome our own self-limiting beliefs. As Lou’s initial enthusiasm gave way to concerns about challenges and obstacles, it became clear how easily we can fall prey to internal barriers that stifle our creativity. These self-limiting beliefs often stem from past experiences, fears of failure, or a lack of confidence in our own abilities. By consciously identifying and pushing past these self-imposed limitations, we can keep our ideas alive and thriving, even in the face of doubt or uncertainty. It takes courage and self-awareness to acknowledge and confront these beliefs, but doing so is essential for unlocking our full creative potential.
Cultivating an environment where ideas can blossom freely is essential for unlocking the full potential of new thinking. When we give ourselves and others the space to explore, expand, and refine ideas without fear of immediate judgment or rejection, we open the door to unexpected solutions and breakthroughs. This means creating a safe and supportive atmosphere where people feel encouraged to share their thoughts, no matter how unconventional or unpolished they may seem. By fostering a culture of open-minded ideation and experimentation, we create the conditions for innovation to flourish. When we embrace the messy, iterative nature of the creative process, we allow our ideas to evolve and grow in ways we may never have anticipated.
Daring to imagine a world without limitations is perhaps the most transformative insight of all. When we suspend our disbelief and allow ourselves to dream big, we tap into a level of creativity and potential that transcends the perceived constraints of our current reality. This means temporarily setting aside practical concerns and allowing our minds to wander freely, exploring the full range of possibilities without getting bogged down in the details. By focusing on the core essence and objectives of our ideas, rather than getting sidetracked by potential roadblocks, we give them the space to evolve and find their way forward. This process of unbridled imagination is often the catalyst for groundbreaking innovations and paradigm-shifting ideas.
In life and leadership, embracing the promise of new thinking, ideas, and potential is essential for inspiring those we lead and love. As we embark on this new year, let us resolve to silence our self-limiting beliefs, cultivate an environment where creativity can thrive, and dare to imagine a world without limitations. By approaching each new idea with a spirit of open-mindedness, curiosity, and possibility, we position ourselves to make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead. Let’s remember that every great achievement began as an idea that someone nurtured and believed in against all odds, and by embracing this mindset, we open ourselves up to a year of transformative growth and impact.
With love, gratitude and wonder.

Rita McGrath has written a compelling analysis contrasting the divergent paths of two retail chains: Party City's downfall and Build-A-Bear's remarkable resurgence. She reveals how Party City, despite its initial success, fell into what she calls "the trap of sustainable competitive advantage," clinging to an outdated retail model while drowning in private equity debt. The company's failure to adapt to changing consumer preferences and its focus on transactional, occasion-based sales ultimately led to its second bankruptcy and the closure of 700 stores.
In contrast, McGrath highlights Build-A-Bear's transformation under CEO Sharon Price John as a masterclass in "transient advantage" - the ability to continuously reinvent and adapt. She describes how Price John reimagined Build-A-Bear from a mall-based retailer into an experiential brand, expanding into diverse locations and demographics while creating emotional connections with customers. This strategic shift, combined with digital transformation and a focus on multiple revenue streams, resulted in record profits by 2024, demonstrating the importance of constant reconfiguration in today's business landscape.
I don't know exactly what's coming except that my friend Sandy Ogg has dedicated over three decades to understanding and developing talent across the global business landscape. Through his work as the founder of CEO.works and his role as an operating partner at the Blackstone Group, he has advised countless organizations on connecting talent to value. His impressive career spans significant positions at companies like Unilever, where he revolutionized their leadership system as Chief Human Resources Officer, and includes valuable experience from his early days performing sea rescues as a U.S. Coast Guard officer.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Sandy has maintained an active presence in education and youth development. He has served on prestigious boards, including INSEAD and the Rotterdam School of Management, and launched several youth sports initiatives, such as Baseballworks and the Diamond Sports Foundation. His commitment to excellence is reflected in his academic achievements, including degrees from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, George Washington University, and the Kellogg School of Management. These culminated in his recognition as a Fellow by the National Academy of Human Resources in 2015. As he posts: Talent alone isn't enough. Neither is the perfect role. It's the magical combination of the two that unlocks your true potential. 2 days. Get ready to "click."?https://sandyontalent.com/?You can bet I'm ready (and you should be too!)
The corporate world is experiencing an unprecedented wave of CEO turnover, with 1,652 CEOs departing their positions in 2023 - the highest number since tracking began in 2002. Companies like Intel, Boeing, Nike, CVS, Peloton, and WeightWatchers have all seen leadership changes, often unexpectedly. According to a Korn Ferry analysis, nearly one-third of CEOs exit by their third year, with 11% leaving within their first year, highlighting a concerning trend in leadership stability.
To address these challenges, Sumeet outlines several key recommendations for successful CEO transitions. These include rethinking the succession planning process with more frequent candidate assessments, avoiding the "boomerang CEO" phenomenon where predecessors return to their roles, recognizing when it's time to step down, establishing authority at the right pace, and managing personal energy levels effectively. The article emphasizes that in today's fast-paced business environment, traditional approaches to CEO succession planning are insufficient, and boards must adopt more proactive and flexible strategies to ensure long-term leadership success.
