In my 15+ years of experience in DevOps, I've led teams, optimized systems, and delivered on complex projects. If there's one principle I've always lived by, it's this: Start with the why.
We often dive straight into the "how" and "what" of things—how we're going to build something, what tools we'll use, or what our end product will look like. But I've found that true, sustainable success only comes when you first understand the Purpose behind what you're doing.
Here's why starting with the why has been so critical to my career—and why it should be central to yours, too.
Clarity in Purpose = Clarity in Action
When I was designing a complex cloud infrastructure for a government agency, the technical requirements were intricate, and the stakes were high. But before jumping into the design and coding, I paused and asked: Why are we doing this? The answer wasn't just about tech—it was about providing secure, scalable services to millions of users.
By understanding the why, I was able to keep my team aligned with the bigger picture. It helped us make decisions faster, avoid unnecessary work, and build solutions that met the core objectives, not just the specs.
Motivation through Meaning
One of the most common challenges in any project is keeping people motivated. When you start with the why, you give meaning to the work. It transforms a seemingly mundane task into a mission.
Whether I'm leading a team to migrate a legacy system or coaching them on DevOps best practices, I always make sure we begin by discussing why it matters. Once my team understands the significance of their contributions, their engagement levels soar.
It's not just about what they're building but the impact they're making.
Better Problem-Solving
When faced with a technical challenge, starting with the why helps you see beyond immediate obstacles and consider the broader impact. It allows for creative problem-solving. You stop asking, "How do we fix this?" and start asking, "Why does this problem exist?"
During a particularly tight project for a financial institution, our Kubernetes platform hit several roadblocks. Instead of patching problems quickly, we revisited our initial why—scalability and efficiency for financial transactions—and rethought our approach. This led to a solution that fixed the immediate issue and improved the overall system architecture.

Stronger Leadership
Great leaders inspire by focusing on Purpose, not just tasks. When you start with the why, you naturally position yourself as a visionary leader. People follow you not just because of what you do but because they believe in why you're doing it.
When I became the director of my consultancy, I realized that my clients weren't just hiring me for my DevOps expertise—they were hiring me because I helped them understand why specific changes needed to happen. I became a trusted partner, not just a contractor, by starting with the why.
Building a Resilient Career
Finally, starting with the why isn't just a project strategy—it's a personal philosophy. It keeps me grounded and focused on the long term, even in a fast-changing industry like tech.
For me, the why behind everything I do is impact—creating meaningful, lasting solutions that make life easier for both the clients I serve and the teams I lead. Keeping that at the forefront of my work has allowed me to stay resilient, innovate continuously, and remain passionate about what I do after all these years.
Conclusion: Find Your Why, and Let It Guide You
Whether you're an engineer, a project manager, or a leader, I challenge you to ask yourself, "Why am I doing this?" Before diving into any task or project. Once you have the why, the how, and the what, it will naturally follow.
When you start with the why, you align your actions with your values, inspire those around you, and ultimately achieve success with greater Purpose and fulfilment.
