Start-Up Success: Algenesis
Rethinking Materials provides a unique platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their dynamic innovations and success stories, driving transformative solutions that increase circularity.
It’s been a huge year for Algenesis Labs . Since featuring as a start-up at Rethinking Materials , the company has consolidated ground-breaking research with the University of San Diego that demonstrates its plant-based polymers biodegrade in under seven month. On top of that, the team have secured $1.5 million from the Department of Defense’s Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program (DBIMP).
We caught up with Chief Business Officer, Nick Sandland , to discuss recent key milestones, commercialisation, and navigating the challenging economic landscape.
In no more than 50 words, explain what challenge you address and what your value proposition is. Be specific.
At Algenesis Labs, we created our plant-based, low carbon and biodegradable Soleic? urethane technology. Our Blueview footwear brand has been a great case study to show the market what is possible with Soleic?, plus our peer reviewed scientific publications have allowed us to demonstrate that Soleic? can reduce persistent microplastics.
What are your company’s key milestones since Rethinking Materials back in May?
Since Rethinking Materials in May, we have successfully completed the first full-scale manufacturing runs of our TPU products. Additionally, we have begun shipping Soleic? in large quantities to our initial customers, marking a significant step toward scaling our operations and meeting market demand.
How did your involvement in the summit support your company objectives?
Our involvement in the summit enabled us to connect with key industry players, and we are now collaborating closely with several of them on a range of notable projects.
Considering market dynamics and your company’s internal development, what is driving your commercialisation strategy? What have been the pivotal “aha” moments that shaped this strategy?
The key ‘aha moment’ that shaped our commercialization strategy was when people began to connect Soleic?’s biodegradability with the elimination of persistent microplastics. This realization highlighted a critical market need and solidified our focus on industries looking for practical, sustainable solutions.
What is your strategy for weathering the current economic climate and turning growth into profitability?
Algenesis benefits from both private funding and U.S. government support, which gives us the flexibility and resources to optimize and commercialize our Soleic? technology at the same time.
What advice would you offer start-ups who are fundraising in today’s challenging economic climate? Why should they get involved in Rethinking Materials 2025?
Start-ups should focus on building a solid foundation in science, understanding market demand, and crafting a compelling narrative. These elements are crucial for success. Rethinking Materials 2025 presents a unique opportunity to connect with key industry players and forge valuable partnerships—all in one event.
