Probably I am not alone here when I am saying to myself that today is the day when I start that important thing that I was planning to do for so long but just kept postponing till the next week, month, or year. Or maybe not now, but definitely next Monday! No, the month is almost over, better let’s start fresh beginning of next month, right? Sounds familiar? And believe it or not, when that time passes you start lying to yourself and yet again postpone it just one last time. Yeah, right!
So, weeks, months, and years pass and you slowly get discouraged, doubt yourself, give it less importance even convince yourself that it was a bad idea, just so you get out of it. You find millions of ways and motives not to do it. Not to get overly dramatic, but this is what we do! And I am no exception. Do you know how long it took me to get back to writing this newsletter? You wouldn’t believe it! I don’t believe it, but it has been almost two years!
And the question now is: How do we get rid of this procrastination without the anxiety brought on by these negative habits and perfectionism?
What came immediately to my mind was what Will Smith once said: ‘The keys to life are running and reading.’ Leaving running aside (which I hate by the way, but I force myself to do from time to time), he continued with: ‘there have been gazillions of people that have lived before all of us. There’s no new problem you could have–with your parents, with school, with a bully. There’s no new problem that someone hasn’t already had and written about it in a book.’
With this in mind, I went quickly online and found one of my favorite books of 2022: Can’t hurt me by David Goggins.
This guy isn’t just talk. He is writing his life story, so things that he did and went through. Mentally and physically he is on a whole new level. Never heard such a story where a person pushes himself so much. And most of all, he doesn't give in to procrastination. He sets a goal and works tirelessly towards it until he achieves it.
The book is not just about Goggins’ story, but also about his philosophy on life, which he calls ‘The 40% Rule’. According to Goggins, when you think you have reached your limits and can’t go any further, you are only at 40% of your true potential. He believes that the key to success is to push beyond this limit, and the only way to do this is to train your mind to overcome the negative self-talk and self-doubt that keep you from reaching your goals.
Goggins’ philosophy is based on the idea that we all have a ‘cookie jar’ in our mind, which holds our past failures, traumas, and negative experiences. Whenever we are faced with a new challenge or opportunity, our mind goes to this cookie jar and pulls out these negative experiences, which then hold us the f..k back from taking action. The key to overcoming this is to acknowledge that these experiences exist but to not let them control us.
One of the key takeaways from Goggins’ book is the importance of setting clear and specific goals. He believes that without a clear goal, it is easy to get lost in the daily grind and lose sight of what you truly want to achieve. He suggests that you write down your goals, both short-term and long-term, and then break them down into smaller, more manageable tasks. By doing this, you can focus on the daily actions that will help you achieve your bigger goals.

Another important lesson from Goggins’ book is the importance of embracing discomfort. He believes that growth and progress come from stepping outside of our comfort zone and facing our fears and challenges head-on. He strongly suggests that we need to embrace discomfort and use it as a tool for personal growth and development. And let me tell you, he is a pro at this!
In conclusion, procrastination is a common problem that can hold us back from reaching our true potential. However, by embracing discomfort, setting clear goals, building momentum, practicing positive self-talk, and taking action, we can overcome procrastination and achieve our biggest dreams and goals (hell yeah! just by writing this I am pumped with excitement and ready to take on the world!). And who knows, maybe one day we will be the ones writing our own life story, just like David Goggins. ??
