Start / Stop / Continue in 2023?

Welcome to first #ArchitectTomorrow newsletter of 2023! Slightly scary that we are almost at the end of January already. First off I wanted to recap the 2023 predictions episode that we dropped late last month:

  • 2023 will likely be the year of constraints
  • Financial headwinds will provide a robust challenge for tech that is struggling to show short to medium term ROI
  • Tech sector is having a delayed adjustment to the market (that many other sectors have already been through) but hiring and retaining tech talent will remain a challenge - what we are seeing is an adjustment blip
  • We are now getting our heads around hybrid; how to be more productive; how to run events and marketing in a hybrid world
  • Sustainability continues to be a key strategic challenge with the environmental impact of digital coming under the spotlight
  • AI is (and will continue to) creating challenges for education, societal norms / ethics, compliance & business operating models
  • Architects will need to understand where AI provides value is potential changing where it should integrate into their environments and solutions (increased products / democratisation means less focus is needed on the hard core modelling side - more on the application and MLOps considerations)

Check out the full episode for more (also available as an audio podcast)

Thanks again to Tom Fairbairn , Sally V Pritchard and Emma Taylor for appearing on this episode.

BTW on AI if you want to see some more examples (beyond GPT) of Generative AI that are making waves - this video by Adrian Twarog is worth a watch. and Futurepedia is building a catalog of different AI tools. Also look out for Beyond the Hype episodes on Large Language Models and the potential impact of GPT on Software Engineering.

What is coming up on #ArchitectTomorrow?

  • Cloud Security and Confidential Computing
  • Spotlight on Digital Sustainability - in particular measurement of cloud services
  • Range of guest interviews including Architecture book authors
  • Further collaboration with IASA, Women in Architecture, Architecture and Governance Magazine and the Chief Architect Forum
  • I'd really like to cover Data Architecture (it's one area that hasn't had much air time on #ArchitectTomorrow yet) and of course more on practical applications of AI / ML.

Get involved!

Let me know your thoughts on Architecture this year - what initiatives are you starting, stopping and continuing?

Do subscribe to the YouTube channel and/or the audio podcast if you haven't already!

As always if you have a particular topic (ideally aligned with one of the key themes) do get in touch - thanks to those of you who have done that recently. Recording slots are now looking like April / May - but there is also the option to co-author blog posts and do audio only if you'd prefer not to be on camera.

I’d like to add one more: the year of adopting hyped technology and making major public mistakes: (think Taybot or Blenderbot!)
