“Start running in that direction and don’t stop ... until you fall over”
If your marathon coach said that to you when you asked them “Where do I start with the first step of my marathon training with you” ... there is a good chances you would be tempted to simply walk away ...
When we want to achieve a new goal or take an aspect of our lives to a new level ... we don’t just need to learn a new set of skills: (1) they need to be the right set of skills (2) we need learn how to apply them (3) we need to change the habits that are keeping this aspect of our lives at this level ... that is commonly called a program
Why are good programs more effective for helping us bring about change in our lives / businesses than the best presentations / books / training session:
(1) the best programs are designed for a specific profile of person who is on a specific journey (for example wanting to run a marathon) : so you can check if the program being offered is for you
(2) the best programs should be designed for that profile of person at the stage they are at in their journey - which assumes the person designing the program knows the stages on the journey (for the marathon journey the stages might be (a) start running (b) then run 10 km a week (c) then run a 100 km a week (d) then run ... etc).
(3) the specific version of the program being recommend should address the profile of person at the stage they are at - in the marathon example if you arent running then the next stage for you is to start running not try and run 10 km next week - and the start of the process is identify what stage of the journey you are at
(4) for the specific stage you are at, the program addresses the skills (resources) you need - in the marathon example maybe to get you running might be (a) to get better running shoes (b) learn some new breathing techniques and (c) try some running routes that you might enjoy
(5) and here is the key: the programs help you introduce the new habits you will need and break some of the old habits that have kept you at your current level (held your back ...) and sometimes that means hands on help from the expert running the program - in the example on the marathon maybe that means that your coach may need to join you on some of the runs to help you overcome specific barriers
Key point: if you assume it’s true that if you take no action then nothing changes (that is nothing much improves in the area of your life / business you are trying to address) ... then probably taking one or two specific actions in this aspect of your life / business (once these actions are identified because they aren’t the same for everyone) ... is the help / support you need most to transform this aspect of your life / business
For the coach: Find what is stopping (blocking ... what they are struggling with most) them in this aspect of their life / business and you will unlock their magic for them ??
And that is the brief “anatomy” or building blocks (program) that is needed to create the program to help you transform a specific aspect of your audiences life / business ??
Take action: as a coach (The Expert) (1) when you are sharing your magic with your audience orientate the content / messages to support the step by step program your audience will need to transform this aspect of their lives / business and take them from where they are at to where they want to be
