Start Off the New School Year Strong!

Hello,

?

I want to extend my gratitude to those who joined the Ready, Set, School email challenge. Thank you! I hope the tips and information shared have helped you and your family in establishing a routine as you transition back into the school year.

?

As we begin a new school year, I know this new phase can be both exciting and a bit nerve-wracking for both parents and children.

?

Here are some practical tips to help your kids do well this year.

?

Setting Goals - What Does Your Child Want?

Ask your child what they want to achieve this school year. Maybe they're aiming for good grades, new friends, or exploring interests beyond class. Knowing their goals will guide them (and you) in what next steps to take.

?

Planning Ahead - How Can They Reach Their Goals?

Planning is like having a map for success. Help your child break down their goals into smaller steps. It's okay if the plan changes along the way – that's all part of the journey.

?

Providing Support - Who's on Your Child's Team?

Sometimes, kids need some extra support. Talk to their teachers and friends to make sure they're getting what they need. Your encouragement can make a difference.

?

Watching and Learning - Embrace the New!

The start of the school year might bring changes. Help your child pay attention to what's new, how things work, and how they feel. It's all part of the process.

?

Dealing with Anxiety - It's Normal!

Starting school can make kids feel anxious, and that's okay. If your child is worried, talk to them about it. Your understanding and support can help ease their nerves. Here are a few things you can try to help them with anxiety:

- Encourage them to take deep breaths when they feel nervous.

- Remind them that it's okay to ask for help if they're struggling.

- Create a calming routine before school to help them feel more relaxed.

?

Talking About Their Day - Let's Talk!

When your child comes home, ask them about their day. Instead of just asking, "How was school?" try these questions:

- What was the best part of your day?

- Did something make you happy or a bit sad?

- Was there something different or new that happened?

- Did you learn something interesting today?

- What's something you're looking forward to doing tomorrow?

?

Remember, sometimes they might need time to think before talking about their day.

?

Being Kind to Themselves

School has its ups and downs. Encourage your child to be kind to themselves. They're not alone – lots of kids feel the same way. They're part of a group of students growing and learning together.

?

And here's something special: If you'd like extra support in creating smooth morning and bedtime routines, click here to get "A+ Morning and Bedtime Routines" guide. It's designed to help your family start and end the day on the right footing.

Really love this coaching approach for children Mama Mindy Green, MSW, especially helping them to figure out and set their own goals for the year. I can't remember ever doing this - yet it gives children so much more autonomy and purpose, rather than to showing up because they have to!

School can be so challenging for so many children. These are great tips. I particulalry love the one one about talking about their day as this can be so powerful in identifying any issues going on. ??
