Being Future Ready | ?Mowbray by Design 2022

Start now. There is no time like now.

Today, we're being asked to step up and develop ourselves, teams and organisations in ways we had only touched on a decade ago. The beautiful thing is we can and do change - we're immensely capable of learning new stuff. New ways of thinking, new skills, competencies, approaches and ways of being in the world. Some might argue that this is the 'Age of Adaptation'.

I witness this every day working with clients needing to develop their personal and collective ability to think differently, find the opportunities in disruption and drive transformation. My focus, along with that of my clients, constantly adapts as the world rapidly changes around and through us.

I thought I'd share a slide I use in many of my sessions outlining what it means to be "Future Fit" or "Future Ready", for want of better terms. These are the things we at least need to be familiar with - if not master, in the form of skills, competencies and disciplines - and the mental models, supported by personality traits, worth developing in ourselves, teams and ultimately, our corporate cultures.

When I reassessed the World Economic Forum's list of Top Ten Skills for 2025, I thought it would be worth adding them to the mix so that you can have a think, explore and connect the dots for yourself:

My clients are no different to you or anyone else. They are smart, well-informed and curious, seeking sustainable growth. If you know you need to develop any of these: Start now. There is no time like now!

3 Things to enrich your thinking for the week ahead

My aim each week?is to bring leaders at all levels three things that are worth knowing about, thinking more deeply about or taking action on. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this week's trio.

The next 10 years: Why the future is better than you think

I've been listening to Gerd Leonhard , Author, Futurist & Humanist, CEO, The Futures Agency, over recent years and he just seems to hit the mark, raising our awareness not only of the interconnectedness of what's coming but the consequences of what we are driving for.

"Technology is a great tool, but a really tough emperor."

In this talk at the World Government Summit 2022 in Dubai this May, Gerd argues that "the future is better than we think" across a variety of topics including climate change, exponential tech, our role in solving human and political challenges, how we are NOT going back to normal, green being the new digital and how sustainability will be the new profitable, how tech and biology are converging, the major shifts in education, how AI should be about competence, not consciousness and the three tickets to the future: Digitisation, Decarbonisation and Reformation.

Why the majority is always wrong | Paul Rulkens

Yesterday, I took a walk n' talk and coffee'd with a friend who really does think outside the confines of any known box. The wonderful thing about our chats is that I always walk away with a palpable expansion of my thinking and the creative juices flowing.

When I happened upon a *post featuring Paul Rulkens ' TEDx Talk this morning, it really hit the mark. Paul is an Author and President of Agrippa Consulting International and focuses on high performance "with the least amount of effort".

*Thanks to Randell McNair for sharing this.

"Breakthrough innovation, extraordinary results happen, when people decide to finally break the standards or the norms in their industry or professional field."
"We know that 3% of people are able to achieve extraordinary results".

Things may have changed dramatically since this talk, however, our propensity to construct our strategies, frameworks and models and the behaviours that drive us, really haven't. Food for thought. I trust you enjoy this as much as I did.

Systemic Resilience Programme | 26 June - 17 July 2020

When the pandemic arrived, one of the first things we did was to design and deliver programmes to support leaders at all levels to develop their ability to be resilient. We've all learned a lot since then - mostly about ourselves and what it actually takes to be resilient.

There are five important lessons I’ve learned about the topic, which I witnessed in myself and my clients from across the world over the last couple of years:

  1. We’re not born with or without resilience - it’s not an innate trait or a resource that can be used up.
  2. We don’t think much about resilience until we feel the lack of it, often using words like exhausted, burned-out or being in a downward spiral to describe how we’re feeling.
  3. We all have the innate human capacity to build our resilience in the same way we might build a muscle or create new habits.
  4. Our ability to be resilient is systemic - we build it holistically by taking care of our whole selves.
  5. We don’t “bounce back” from difficult times, rather, if we’re well equipped, we emerge forward, forever changed and more resilient.

Master Facilitator, Paul van Musschenbroek , has designed and curated something truly?empowering and transformational in the form of the Systemic Resilience Programme by bringing together a wonderful team of leading thinkers and teachers in their fields.

Regarding your first point, I have a book recommendation and influencer to follow: Geoffrey Cann, and his latest book “Carbon, Capital, and the Cloud”. I interviewed him for my first attempt at a video podcast called #informingpossibilities. Geoffrey casts a compelling strategic vision for investment, innovation, and industry 4.0 for the energy sector. https://www.dhirubhai.net/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6918336804265852928 As for point 2, thanks for the shout out. I have to credit YouTube’s algorithm for uncovering that one.
