Start now! Lauren Cameron’s work supporting tourism businesses to account for carbon & reduce emissions is featured in this month's VE profile.

Lauren Cameron , Carbon Action Advisor at Tasmania’s peak body for tourism, the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania (TICT) works with Tasmanian tourism businesses to support them to reduce emissions and transition to more regenerative tourism practices.

Where are you from? Sydney, NSW originally, the traditional custodians being the Gadigal?of the Eora Nation.?

What’s your fondest memory of working in the VE???It might have been starting out my career working for Quentin Long at Australian Traveller magazine – he was a trailblazer and continues to be now! (see last month’s VEN Profile).

What are you looking forward to and why???Reaching the stage where I no longer need to educate industry on WHY we should urgently decarbonise and reduce our environmental impact, and instead can focus solely on HOW tourism operators can achieve this.

THRIVE 2030 has three themes - collaborate, modernise and diversify – can you tell us what you’re doing in these three areas to improve our visitor economy growth, quality and sustainability??

COLLABORATING FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR TOURISM: We have rolled out an industry-led emissions reduction program that brings committed tourism businesses together on a digital platform (ERC Protocol?: Your Path to Affordable Climate Action for SMEs ( ercaustralia.com.au ) so that businesses can see, like and learn from one another’s decarbonisation plans.

MODERNISING BUSINESS PRACTICES: The TICT is nearing completion of an emissions-reduction initiative that subsidises Tasmanian tourism businesses to begin carbon accounting, while providing free access to tools and resources that make the process efficient for SMEs.

DIVERSIFY: Through the TICT I have been delivering regenerative tourism workshops to industry, in partnership with The Tourism Collective . In these workshops, we focus on respecting and protecting the Tasmanian Aboriginal culture by being inclusive of culturally diverse visitors, respecting cultural intellectual property, and forging stronger partnerships with local Indigenous communities.

What’s your best tip, advice, or lesson learned for the visitor economy right now??On sustainability: start small but start now. There is an urgent need for the visitor economy to act deliberately and collaboratively to reduce industry-wide emissions and to reconsider how we deliver tourism experiences so we can reduce any negative impacts and increase positive impacts. Austrade’s Sustainable Tourism Toolkit is a fantastic place to start.

What is your dream/recommended location in Australia for:?

·?????? hosting a team building event??Wild Adventures Melbourne due to its all-encompassing approach to positive impact tourism.

·?????? experiencing nature and First Nations’ culture??Wukalina Walk, Tasmania
