Building a professional network can seem overwhelming when you're just starting out. However, by being consistent, leveraging your personal contacts, and focusing on making it comfortable for the other person, you can gradually build a network.
Eventually, that network will work for you, bringing in referrals and business opportunities without the need for constant prospecting.
Leverage your personal contacts
You don't need a massive professional network to begin. Start with your personal contacts—friends, family, acquaintances. These initial connections can provide valuable support and potentially introduce you to others in their network.
The key is to make these interactions comfortable for the other person. When reaching out to your personal contacts, focus on them rather than your own needs. Ask about their experiences, listen to their stories, and find ways to be of help to them.
This approach not only builds trust but also sets a foundation for future business relationships.
Build and expand your professional network
As you engage with your personal contacts, you'll start making new connections and gradually build a professional network. Attend industry events, join relevant groups, and be active in professional communities.
Especially early on, the more you show up, the more opportunities you'll have to meet new people and expand your network.
Networking isn't a one-time activity; it's an ongoing process. Be consistent in your efforts—regularly attend events, follow up with contacts, and stay active on platforms like LinkedIn. This consistency helps keep you top-of-mind and reinforces the relationships you're building.

Utilize LinkedIn effectively
LinkedIn is a powerful tool for networking. It's made a huge difference for me.
Connect with people you meet in professional settings and engage with their content. Connect with your personal contacts as well. Go through LinkedIn's suggested connections to find people you know.
Be sure to interact as well. Share your own insights and experiences, and be sure to comment on and like posts from your network.
Remember, it's about making it about the other person—support their achievements and engage in meaningful conversations.
From networking to referrals
Over time, your professional network will grow and deepen. As you build these relationships, you'll find that people are more likely to refer business to you. Provide exceptional service, stay in touch, and make it easy for your contacts to refer you.
If you're consistent and focused on the other person, your network will eventually become a valuable source of referrals and direct business, significantly reducing the need for traditional prospecting.
Networking is a journey, not a destination. It requires patience, genuine interest in others, and consistent effort. Share your successes and challenges along the way, and learn from the experiences of others.
By focusing on building relationships, you'll create a network that supports your long-term success.

Good article Mike Crandall. You have to go with what you are comfortable with as well and if that’s not picking up a phone and cold calling, then don’t do it! Be natural and use what’s right around you at first which is your personal contacts.
