Manufacture Process
Lithium-ion battery packs are composed of individual cells, which contain a variety of anodes, cathodes and electrolytes. These cells are assembled in a plastic case and stacked together for use in any application. There are two basic types of lithium-ion batteries: cylindrical cells, used for flashlights, laptops and cell phones; and prismatic cells, used in electric cars. The process to manufacture these battery packs is similar to that of other rechargeable batteries, but with some special considerations. The process starts with raw materials such as carbon (anode), cobalt (cathode) and iron phosphate (electrolyte). These materials are then mixed with a solvent to create slurry, which is applied onto aluminum foil in thin layers using rollers. Once dried, these layers are cut into strips that form electrodes.
