Self-Mastery is an important journey to take and can have a massive impact on your achievements and enjoyment of life.
"He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered himself is mightier still." - Lao Tzu
As Shi Heng Yi says, one of the two mistakes is not starting the journey.
Self-Mastery is a fundamental step on the path to becoming a more effective leader. The more you are aware of and understand yourself, your capabilities and your emotions, the more you can control and influence yourself and your self-development.?
Over the next two weeks we will reflect on some key aspects of developing self mastery, with a longer monthly article covering this in more detail later this year.
So have you started the journey? There’s starting and then there’s really starting. Everyone’s journey is different and so is each destination. Start by being clear about what self mastery means for you. This will change and evolve over time, but getting clear about your personal self mastery is a great first step.?
This is likely to encompass many factors, your mentality, self-discipline,? emotional intelligence, your enjoyment of life, how you handle situations, your physical body and even how you relate and react to others.?
As you increase your self-mastery, you will find that your leadership capabilities and effectiveness will increase exponentially, and potentially also your enjoyment of life.
I strongly encourage you to define what Self-Mastery means for you for yourself rather than take someone else’s definition. Here are a few business-related self mastery questions you can ask yourself (if they apply to your version of Self-Mastery) to explore where you currently are on the journey.
Out of 10 how well can you…
??remain present and calm in the moment?
??keep your cool in tough or difficult situations?
??enjoy each moment?
??avoid judging yourself?
??recognise, acknowledge and release any ego that is triggered?
??accept yourself, your weaknesses and setback, and learn from them?
??have gratitude for yourself, for life and the people around you?
??respect yourself and others?
??display a grounded, relaxed and serious attitude that inspires credibility?
Define Self-Mastery for you and how you intend to be, and then start your journey towards it.

3 个月James self mastery is the key to a fulfilling life - love the Sun Tzu quote and the fact that success in any field of endeavour is starting and then working until completion. I have just started a 100 month "self investment" course. A "Late Life Pivot" if you will, divided into a 40 month initial foundation phase, then a 60 month growth phase - this will lay the foundation for the next 180 months of work before I "retire". It has only taken 40 years of prep to get today so not too shabby??. All your questions are covered in the Foundation phase and from my "skills acquisition" past I know that my personality needs to be subjected to multiple repetitions, but each a slight iteration, of a piece of knowledge, a physical activity for it to create a neurological change in my brain. Once a neurological change has happened then the activity becomes a habit, the conscious becomes "unconscious" and it becomes "effortless". But to get to that point you have to choose wisely what you wish to master, then spend the time and effort (alas no hacks) to encode the nervous system. Do this and you will, as the mythologist, Joseph Campbell says "follow your bliss"
